Mutombo brings a level of humanity, relatability, compassion and empathy that Nick Nurse seemed to lack. I think he would be a great fit for the team and the organization. We need someone that can bring this team together. Not only a coach that the players can respect both on and off the court, but a coach that respects the players as people as well.

The only downside for me personally is his history within the organization. Like I would prefer to welcome some “new blood”, so to speak, into the franchise. His hiring, or any previous assistant Raptors coach hiring would signal that the organization is catering to Fred and Pascal. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, but I do think that this franchise desperately needs a shot in the arm. So firing Nick Nurse and promoting an (ex) assistant seems too much like a half step for me.

That said Masai did repeatedly mention re-establishing a Raptors “culture” that has been lost, which to me suggest that they are more likely to go the route of someone that was part of that “culture” to begin with.
