Boston Celtics lose Game 4 in overtime, botch last second play

The Celtics looked bad to start this game, then they were in a position to steal Game 4 from the Sixers, and then they ended up blowing it. They went from scrappy comeback to facepalm over the last 30 seconds of overtime when Jaylen Brown left James Harden open for 3-pointer with Philly down 2. Then with the ball and 18 seconds, the Celtics didn’t even get a shot off. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal goes in depth on those final two plays before sharing that Al Horford is coming out of this game encouraged.

  1. Brogdon should've taken last shot in regulation. Why must we watch Smart continually take the biggest shots?

  2. no coach no win- he doesn't believe in time outs or coasching – they are on their own- timeouts are for teams that have coaches

  3. the funny thing is so many of the same ppl mad that Mazzulla didn’t call timeout are the same people that think Mazzulla’s ATO’s are trash.

if he calls timeout immediately after the bucket they would have STILL drained the clock before making the move.

he can’t win with some ppl who literally thirst for every loss so they can scapegoat Mazzulla because they are so scared even the slightest criticism of Tatum will run him out of town they need SOMEONE to scapegoat.

enter the new guy who replaced “Jayson Tatum’s favorite coach of all time” & it’s an easy, cheap proxy.

the reality is this is on Tatum. whether Mazzulla calls TO immediately after the Harden 3 or lets them bring it up then calls TO when things start to go awry by the 11 second mark, as long as Jayson Tatum, the “leader” of this team, is the guy initiating the action it will ALWAYS be casual.

Jayson Tatum is casual. Jayson Tatum scoring 2 points in the first half is casual.

Mazzulla taking a TO or not taking a TO is secondary to the failures of the players, most importantly Jayson Tatum who repeatedly comes up small in big moments.

secondly, Jaylen Brown leaving Harden open for 3 to double Embiid down by 2 was the worst read imaginable BUT he was the only guy who came out with intensity & played aggressively MOST of the game…

& thats my BIGGEST criticism of Joe Mazzulla, & it’s a trend that has followed over from Sunday Udoka & even Brad Stevens: TAKING THE BALL OUT OF JAYLEN’S HANDS LATE IN THE GAME.

this is an egregious disrespect of the Celtics’ most consistent player.

i will never understand why Smart is taking not 1 but 2 fucking shots at the buzzer. Tatum wasn’t lighting it up, how about try Jaylen?

im not worried about this series but the more these lapses occur the weaker the Celtics look & the more emboldened their opponents will get moving forward & i dont think Miami (or New York) need any extra motivation. Miami was a Jimmy Butler 3 from going to the Finaks last season.

IF the Celtics dont break thru this year i dread the fallout in the offseason because we all know Jaylen will be back on the block because Brad & Wyc will NEVER move on from Jayson Tatum who repeatedly underperforms when it matters most.

  4. Well you can’t just say if tatum would have played like that from the beginning it would have been a easy win. It’s and buts are good hindsight. You could have said that for maxey too. What if he scored five more points. What if embiid didn’t miss three free throws.

  5. Yeah JB brain farted and helped, yeah Joe should of called a timeout, but Tatum shat the bed on that last play, way to casual, he had so much time and egged it , attack the Sixers and draw a foul. Get a shot off at least. Drive into the chest of your opponent and get to the rim.

  6. The Celtics nearly beat the 76ers in their house for the second time in a row! In the playoffs! The Celtics are a deep in talent and somewhat low on maturity. The coach should have called a timeout.

  7. C’s have been here before. The players have been in this same situation before. They know what they need to do.

  8. This is another loss on Massula lack of knowledge he is responsable for call a time-out and set a play any other cough will call for timeout and may plane for one or two plays

  9. Hey uh you said you were waiting for harden to have a great game again and he did… sooo now what?

  10. If this series goes to game 7 then Celtics will lose. Mazulla will choke hard under that pressure.

  11. Karalis is having blind faith just like a lot of C’s fans who say “instead of 5, we winning in 6” even tho he said it’s going 6 this team shows you over and over again since some games in the reg szn that in the clutch these guys will lose and give away games in the clutch and In the playoffs even worst they let the hawks steal one to let the series go an extra game and could have stole one but again just folded in the clutch again. Not to mention letting them steal game 1. When the game is tight every advantage goes to the 6ers that’s what both teams showed this series. They have a coaching advantage, more resilient, more trust in their pg to not turn the ball over and I can keep going but every team who won a chip as long as I could remember were resilient in the clutch. Even if they had long series because champs weren’t sweeping or gentlemen sweeping every finals series or series leading up to it and not to mention close series no matter how hard they were to get an advantage. But they did do what the sixers have done all playoffs. The best team with the best odds and usually one of the best records and talent get knocked off every year, the team who was “supposed to win the chip” and Vegas favorite, who I thought were the bucks this year but they were just the frauds of this year that team might just be the Celtics. To backtrack on these problems in the playoffs the Celtics did the same exact thing last year, couldn’t close certain games and had 2 series go to 7 games when it could have ended earlier which cost them dearly in the finals when they could have gone up 3-1 but at that time they were gassed and instead of being able to combat with strategy and effort they were just trying to fight all they can because our top player was just gassed in the finals and ended up losing in 6. This team def has a chance to win the series but you’re only going to disappoint yourself by not believing when the Celtics show you who they are and thinking they will change. Yesterday was a perfect opportunity to change the narrative of this team in the clutch and prove that our coach knows what to do in the clutch and isn’t too young and inexperienced to win with a championship team.
But these are the same old Celtics if we do make it next round we are blowing a game or 2 in each of the next rounds and it’s going to cost us. The 76ers aren’t that far behind us in terms of a good team coaching and execution closes the gap between overall talent

  12. Mazulla lost this game. In last second he should defend the advantage and in with R.Willians and Horford and out D.White

  13. Classic Mazzula Celtics loss. No time out, check. Tatum taking it up instead of a point guard, check. Brown not involved in the play, check. Jacking up a three when you only need a two or free throws, check. Marcus Smart as the bailout last second contested shot, check.

  14. The worst shooter on the team taking both potential game winners..Celtics will never learn..SMH🤬

  15. It was a tough loss but we were down for most of the game. Philly came in with there backs against the wall and balled out. JB knows he made a bad read. It happens, now lets go back home and knock the socks off Philly!

  16. While the last two sequences were huge this game was lost in the first quarter and not getting stops for like 7 straight minutes in the third. Also, the Celtics should have the wherewithal at this point to call a timeout themselves if they see the play isn’t going anywhere.

  17. The pain the Celtics can’t help themselves with double teaming and guys stop saying that Joe Mazzulla needs to be fired

John you predicted right about 76ers winning two games let’s hope for the best in game 5

  18. Brown should’ve trusted Tatum who had 4 blocks at that point to at least get a good contest on an embid layup rather than double . Joe should’ve called a timeout twice BUT if Tatum passed that ball a millisecond earlier we win the game . Game 5 is ours for the taking 👌🏿

  19. Tatum walking the ball up the court never gets good results, yet they repeat this losing strategy over & over. The coach needs to put a stop to it

  20. It would have been great to get both games at Philly, but Boston got a split which is better than not getting one win in Philly. Win game 5 and the conversation changes in favor of Boston. The playoffs is all about getting four wins no matter how they look to everybody else.

  21. I’m just annoyed that we keep doing this we beat ourselves last night but next game mentality Celtics in 6 ☘️

  22. Sixers fan coming in peace. Obviously I hate the Celtics but am a big fan of Brown and Brogdan, White too. Al Horford is a traitor and will forever be hated in Philly but played Jo very well. The C's scare the hell outta me as they're a terrible matchup for the Sixers but man, the Cs just don't play smart basketball. Why does Brown disappear every second half? Tatum is a great player but his Kobe complex of just jacking up terrible shots is plain stupid. FYI, he's not Kobe, no one ever will be! It's the best of 3 series now and I'm super hopeful but not confident we win this series. Only way my Sixers pull this out is if Harden and Embiid go off and carry this team as Harris is worthless and Maxey is young and too small. Good luck y'all and go Sixers!

  23. I feel fine. It took 42 from Harden (which he only got because the refs gifted them 2 early fouls on Jaylen forcing him to be taken off of Harden defensively that let him get going) to win by 1 in OT in a game we knew we would get the 6ers best punch because it was a MUST WIN game for them. Whats important is that the Cs now go how, respond, and then crush the 6ers dreams in game 6. Didn't you guys know, Cs are winning each round in 6 to honor Bill Russell.

Also, I hate that all anyone is gonna be talking about until game 5 will be the 6ers winning game 4. No one will mention the Cs stealing home court in game 3 or the fact that the Cs were down 90-75 and then went on like a 30-5 run to catch up and even make it a game in the fourth.

  24. Hard to make-up for all those Embiid & Harden flop calls through the game lmfao, Philadelphia Floppers for sure!

  25. I’ve been as critical of this team’s situational mentality as anyone, but I’m not going to lean into outrage porn over this game.

Yes, the final two possessions of OT were ill-executed, but the vast majority of this game was extremely positive.

BOS withstood shooting & stuck with it. They stayed connected by making critical plays. They found their footing and almost stole a game that PHI was desperate to win.

All the key indicators were positive in terms of the macro issues. I agree with Horford 100%

  26. I think the real problem is Tatum effort and them not playing through Brown he’s been the hot guy and after halftime they never go back to him they do all this extra to get Tatum going . Jaylen should be taking 20 shots a game especially since he’s been hot

  27. I dont know how Brad stevens is letting this ish ride. This is when you step up and tell him his game plans in the clutch this season have not worked. JOE interm tag should have never been changed

  28. Also I would be worried as a 6ers fan that Embiid is showing that he is great in the first half but doesn't have the legs once around halfway through the 3rd comes around and it has cost them. I am sure that has something to do with missing 2 weeks and his injury, but I don't see that changing over the next 2, 4 or 6 days. Can they really expect another 40+ point game from Harden? Who knows though, I wasn't expecting the second game.

  29. I trust this game leaves a sour taste in they mouth! They should learn from their mistakes and be the better Team the remainder of this series to win!!

  30. i think ur Boston coach is bad at drawing up plays, so he don't call timeouts. he is CLEARLY SCARED 2 DO IT. its obvious. IS HE STUPID, AND DOES NO KNOW WHE 2 CALL A TIMEOUT? NO, HE IS SCARED. he is hurting his team consistently ALL YEAR LONG. if DOC WAS IN BOS. T WOULD BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT. NOW u have a bum who NEVER PLAYED THE GAME, IS CLUELESS, NERVOUS, AND CAN'T CALL PLAYS.

  31. Celtics should feel encouraged because the 6ers aren't playing better than that, the Cs can easily play better than that, and it's still a 1 point OT loss in Philly.

  32. UR that guy who just talks and u think things are just so easy 2 pull off. do u gear urself? do u know how fast this game is? oh yeah, just hit that shot, just drive and hit that 3. BRO, UARE A CARTOON CHARACTER. biggest Monday QB I HAVE EVER HEARD ON YOUTUBE. ur a clown. THE COACH screwed up. that's bottom line. u don't need timeouts after the game ends. THEY DONT CARRY OVER! MR. CLOWN SHOES. wake up.

  33. I feel like y’all keep down playing the brown play. That’s some simple shit, you don’t give up a 3 trying to stop someone from a 2 while you’re up 2. I feel y’all saying the last play was bad but that double on defense was just terrible and JB can goto Joe and demand he guard Harden why don’t he demand the ball? He’s scared of that moment
