All these players that we ask “why would we let them go?” may seem confusing at first. Then we contemplate if it was for the teams benefit or for the draft picks in coming years, which could still both be accurate motivations. Knowing Pop and the organization (from a longtime fans perspective) the most interest is in the players themselves to have the best careers possible. From Lonnie to White, DJ, Patty and more. We sigh at the thought of losing great players only needing a moment to realize and witness their careers blossom. The spurs truly put the players above their own needs at all times and that is a rare sight so see in todays NBA. From now on we may get upset to lose great pieces of our group but I’ll try to remember what it’s truly for and trust that they have the best intentions when doing so. All that to say Im so proud of Lonnie Walker. From a struggling past to being a important piece of the Play offs and accomplishing his dreams. The spurs could never be so selfish to keep him here in a rebuilding year. Congratulations Mr. Skywalker because you’ve continued to inspire me to reach beyond the stars.
Sincerely, a forever fan

Disagree. We should not put individual players above teams or fans. How can we ever rebuild if draft picks only stay a few years?
I’m clearly a huge Lonnie fan and I’m so excited for him. I really hope that last nights game gives him a big bag next year since he’s on a 1-year with the Lakers
That being said, anybody asking “what happened?” In regards to us letting him walk simply didn’t watch his time with the Spurs or don’t have much context to the spurs and the orgs relationship with Lonnie. For one, Lonnie has always been passive and inconsistent, even last night before the 4th quarter he was mostly just standing out there. He seems to have some confidence issues cause once he gets going he’s truly special, it just takes him a while to get there
However, even with his special scoring ability, it just wasn’t a fit with the spurs (especially our current roster). Lonnie is fighting for contracts and playing on a rebuilding team is hardly ever good for that. Going to the Lakers has allowed him to shine like never before, but I still don’t think many spurs fans are going to lose sleep over it. Nothing but happy for the guy
It goes both ways. The Spurs especially Pop always emphasize that there are greater things beyond basketball and they try and do good to their players by setting them up to succeed with the team or somewhere else. If it ain’t working out, the Spurs move on. That works to the benefit of the team and the player. At the end of the day it’s a business, but the Spurs care about their employees.
Extremely inconsistent. He would have a hell of a night where he looked elite only to stink it up the next 4-5 games. He has a confidence / personality issue.
He wasnt in yall timeline sm shit with derrick its better to let players go to better situations
Lonnie was ready last night when his number was called. I’m sure Pop was very proud of him. He is developing and needed a different opportunity to find his path.
I hate the Lakers but i was rooting for all his shots to go in.
