[Bill Simmons] Miami scored 46 third quarter points and the Celts never called a timeout. The Celts went on a 7-0 run to start the 4Q and Spo called a timeout 94 seconds in.

Just like *The Town*, you can’t just call a timeout in life.

  2. DirksSexyBratwurst

Zombie Heat about to put Bill in the hospital.

Mazzulla has weird tendencies, im sure he can be a good coach down the line.

Boston is missing Ime, he knew how to light a fire under the players. While Tatum, Brown and Smart all have ECF experience, they’re all still pretty young.

  4. GrippinTheDalaiLlama

Mazzulla was still pissed he didn’t get to finish The Town during the halftime break so he was taking it out on the team

  5. YouStillTakeDamage

Okay what the fuck is it with coaches and not calling timeouts when Miami goes on a run?

I remember Nate and Doc doing the same last year.

I’ve never thought “we should call a timeout” and watch Spo just sit there.

  6. Gamblito

Spo should count against the cap.

One coach being this much better than the other isn’t fair lmao

  7. 7-0 run should be an automatic time out unless you’re up 30.

  8. PatientIndividual651

The coaching difference can probably make up for the talent difference between the two teams.

  9. Muted_Dog7317

It’s okay though because Mazzulla said they won 3 out of 4 quarters

  10. Icy_Increase3376

Another thing how the fuck did they only have 3 timeouts for the whole 2nd half? Why did he use so many in the first half for no reason and just stood there as his team fell apart.

Also how ducking lame was that clipboard “throw” a 6 year girl could throw harder than him. He’s a complete clown and looks like a fool

  11. OkHamaStore

its a sign of a good coach. Carlisle is the same exact way, while Kidd is like Mazzulla …

Spo is the greatest basketball mind in the History of the NBA. We as a human species are not worthy of seeing his basketball acumen in motion. No other coachs synapses are quick enough to let them come to the conclusion that they would need a timeout at that moment in time. I would literally let Spo impregnate my wife just so I could raise his basketball genius offspring. He is the best coach in the NBA.

  13. Everyone knows, you only call a timeout after the 47th point

  14. dynorphin

I like how Billiam Simmons pretends to know basketball but the fraud hasn’t seen The Town more than twice in the last decade.

  15. tripleyothreat

Dude I swear to fucking God this was my thought as this is going on. Like wtf?!

  16. _Zap_Rowsdower_

Darvin Ham used to do this every game in the season but since Buddenholzer got fired he is godly managing timeouts.

  17. HoldR2ForLongerLife

Game 1 against the Atlanta last year where we’re up like 25 in the 4th and the Hawks scored back-to-back buckets and Spo immediately called a timeout. He don’t fuck around runs lol.

  18. ablslyr

I’m starting to feel that Spo has much more experience than Mazulla.

  19. reading the game and time management is a strong suite for spo. for example, in the ny series, knicks were usually down to 2 timeouts by the middle of the 3rd quarter, whereas we would have 6 or so. in this very game, at half time when we were down 9 points, we still had 6 timeouts to boston’s 3, even though they lead pretty much all half.

More coaches should be on paid per win contracts

  21. chipsternrcs47

I think good coaches know what adjustments to make in the huddle to stop the run. Bad coaches pray their team can fix it on the court, because they cant fix it in the huddle

  22. _Jetto_

Everyone wants to be like Phil Jackson but nobody knows or forgets that the triangle was an ACTUAL OFFENSE wereher you like it or not that had built in options so he didn’t need to call timeouts as much

  23. JoeTheHoe

In game 6 vs Denver, the game was close. Then Monty took out KD and ran Booker alone with a bunch of bench scrubs— a move that notably lost them game 1 vs LAC.

The nuggets proceeded to go on a 17-0 run, and Monty did not call a timeout at any point. Season ended at that point.

    Call your timeouts.

  24. ChecayoBolsfan

Had the distinct feeling watching tonight’s game this series could entirely come down to Spo’s expertise against Mazulla’s natural youthful naïveté

  25. TinFoilRobotProphet

Jason Kidd: what is this “time out” you speak of? Some kind of sorcery?

  26. Flat_Stranger69

Looks like another coach is getting fired this seasom

  27. RichardRDown

Mazzulla too busy watching The Town.

  28. Rondoninho

I will forever think fans criticizing coaches for their in-games decisions and adjustments (or lack thereof) is dumb, unwarranted, and reactionary… most of the time.

There’s no other way around it here. Forget about the thoughtful observations that geniunely intelligent basketball analysts like Zach Lowe are making about how your team is playing and what they could do differently to play better. When your **own players** are calling you out for not noticing the stuff that others have already seen, it’s a big problem. When *fans* like Bill Simmons point out obvious adjustments that could have been made earlier against the Sixers to play better, adjustments that ended up being made in that game 7 rout, it’s a **big, big problem**.

Mazzulla is talented; Danny Ainge wanted to bring him to Utah alongside Hardy for a reason. He could be a really good head coach. He’s not a good head coach right now. If the C’s get knocked out because of these amateur-level mistakes, Stevens needs to look at either coming back or moving on from him, because this roster is too talented and too experienced at this point to be losing in this fashion, or to be waiting for an underqualified head coach to bring himself up to speed. I hope I’m wrong about all of this.

  29. ConstantineMonroe

Joe Mazzulla is too busy rewatching The Town to go over game tape and learn to call a timeout

Quote from the new episode just leaked

**Simmons:** The Celtics look like they’re about to take this series by the horns and squash this Cinderella fantasy in the first half. Then they come out in the 2nd half and look like the same team with the same issues we’ve been worrying about all this time – outmatched Mazulla, can’t dribble Brown, sure Rob Williams dunks some lobs but is a complete liability on the perimeter, Smart sets a personal record for assists in a half in the 1st half then completely shits the bed and gets one the rest of the game. I don’t know, what’s your take?

**Russillo:** I wanna know how you’re doing. You okay?

**Simmons:** Not good. This feels like Game 6 against Philly midway through the 4th quarter all over again. But this time I’m not sure they can pull out the same bail-your-season comeback. That was against two all-time playoff choke artists, three if you count Doc. That team had no heart, no resolve. This Heat team, and it starts with Jimmy and Spo, are fucking scary. I’d trust Spo, Jimmy, and any four scrubs in the world to beat that Sixers team in a 7 game series.

**Russillo:** (sighs really loudly) Yea I don’t know what happened to Tatum in that 4th quarter either. The two travels in a row.

    **Simmons:** This just solidifies what I’ve been saying. He’s a 1B, not a 1A.

  31. TheOneWhosCensored

Anyone who’s watched Boston this year shouldn’t be shocked, Joe refuses to call timeouts and manage his time.

  32. TigerKlaw

You gotta understand, the Celtics need the timeouts for next game

  33. The-Waifu-Collector

Joe forgets he’s the coach cuz he’s watching the game like the rest of us.

  34. Ear_Enthusiast

I don’t know what the fuck Mazzulla is doing sometimes. Not knowing when to call a timeout, and giving Pritchard so much burn killed us. He could have put Hauser or Grant out there. Grant in particular will come out and play high level defense and he very much contributes offensively. Pritchard was just a spectator offensively and a liability defensively.

  35. lame_user_0824

The timeout criticism never fails to amaze me. Phil Jackson didn’t believe in calling timeouts either when other teams went on runs, it can be effective as well
