The Knicks could bring Randle back. Get that out of the way. In fact, it’s the most likely outcome.
With that said, if the Knicks were to trade Randle, I agree with this logic – https://twitter.com/shwinnypooh/status/1658970822797668354 – that we don’t need to replace his 25-10 with a single player.
.
I’ll take it a step further and say that a *”step-back”* trade may be the better move, than trying to force a trade for a *”better player”*. Simply put, the list of better, all star players to trade for is filled with bleak contracts. We can all agree on no thanks to KAT (yuge contract), Dame (yuge contract, have brunson), Lavine (yuge deal), or Beal (yuge deal). And unfortunately, I don’t think Jaylen Brown, SGA, Embiid, Booker, Bridges or Ingram will be available.
.
Based on my in-depth, total 5 minutes of researching the Ringer’s top 125 NBA players, I’ve created a list of prospects, each of which would be considered a *”step back”* from Randle, that could play at 3 or 4. These are guys who I think we could conceivably trade for, or sign & trade for – Jerami Grant, OG, KP, Miles Turner, Kuzma, Tobias, John Collins or DeAndre Hunter, and DILLON BROOKS. 9 guys. What are your thoughts on trading Randle for any of these guys, assuming we receive some other compensation.
.
Why I like thinking about this kind of trade – quite frankly, I’d rather trade Randle for a better-fit, *step-back* player + picks, than trade Randle + picks for KAT. Would you rather trade:
• Randle + Quickley + 4 FRPs for KAT
• Randle for Jeramy Grant + a FRP, or Randle + IQ/Grimes/Deuce for Grant + salary + 2 FRPs?
.
I wouldn’t have proposed a trade like this last year, but I truly believe that **having Brunson on the roster** allows the Knicks to pursue an option like this, if they so choose. And for all of the **WE MUST TRADE RANDLE** folks out there, these are better options IMO than trading for KAT.

You only trade Randle as part of a package to bring in a superior player. That’s it. Anything else is lunacy.
Dillon Brooks + 2 FRP (1 protected, 1 unprotected) for Randle in a sign & trade w/ Memphis. Dillon Brooks plays lock down D, and buys into lowering his usage rate from mid 20s to the 15 – 20% range, cut out the midrange crap, focus on D. Dillon Brooks is a THIBS kind of defender who could really help this team.
Stating that the entire fan base doesn’t want KAT, Dame, LaVine, or Beal is quite the assumption lol
The only step back trade I would do is Randle for #3 to get Brandon Miller. I watch quite a bit of college basketball and he fits this team as a glove imo. He is an elite 3 pt shooter and has some very underrated shot creation. I think the biggest thing in replacing Randle if we were to do is to get a ball handler. I like Obi but a Brunson Grimes RJ Obi Mitch lineup buts to much ball handling responsibility on Brunson. Grimes doesnt put the ball on the floor well enough. RJ showed good flashes in the playoffs of it but Im not sure if you want his usage that high.
While I agree with the premise, and I’ve been saying all year the team as is could replace the 25 without missing a beat. (Just not that hard on 19 shots and a 30%usage) you also don’t need the full 25 when the defense is 6 point/per 100 worse with him on the floor. That being said a free agent and one pick or that ridiculous idea to give up iq and grimes make this hard to take serious for randle fans.
why would you say no to Dame?! you don’t think a Dame + Brunson backcourt would WRECK the league?
Iknow we were linked to OG, but I think a cheaper alternative might be Kuminga. He’s a two way player with great size, has averaged close to 10 ppg on good efficiency. He’s played in a winning system. He could play off the bench and get the backup minutes at the 3/4. He can eventually start if we move RJ or Grimes or if they’re not playing well.
I don’t know what his value is, maybe Obi or one of those extra picks that we have. Golden state probably wants veterans in return, so they could either flip that or it could be a 3 team trade.
Puke. This is just stupid. Why is everyone all of a sudden in love with grant and forcing Randle trades to the Blazers. it literally makes zero sense for this team.
I understand the sentiment. It may be correct.
I don’t know that with where the team is in its life cycle, a step back is required. It’s arguable that betting on organic growth is more prudent.
Jeremy Cohen said recently that it easier to go from a star to a bigger star (randle plus ? for a bigger fish) as opposed to a star (randle), to pieces, to a bigger star. That stayed with me. Sounds correct.
What’s the rush? Wait, grow, improve incrementally, and capitalize when the *right* move presents itself. Admittedly, that window is probably equal to the time we have JB on this value at his cap #.
Tommy Beer wrote about the KAT idea today – [https://tommybeer.substack.com/p/no-the-knicks-should-not-trade-for?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2](https://tommybeer.substack.com/p/no-the-knicks-should-not-trade-for?utm_source=profile&utm_medium=reader2)
Long story short: No.
Kat would be worse than randle for our team
I think Randles value is pretty low now, lets build up his value during the regular season and see what we can fetch. our ceiling is going to be 2nd round if he continues to be our 2nd best player. ideally we can get an upgrade on rj, aka a wing that can shoot. construction of this team is weird with 3 lefties and awful spacing
Would Indiana agree to a Julius/Obi/Fournier package for Myles Turner and Buddy Hield?
I think there are ways for the Knicks to trade Randle and still take a step forward.
I’d love to see a Randle for Lavine swap and maybe we can get Portland involved. The Bulls would have to want to tank for this to happen which is somewhat plausible. All of Chicago’s draft picks are theirs or hold a top 10 protection. Randle to Portland, Lavine+1 Portland FRP to NY, and 3+Simons to Chicago could benefit everyone. Chicago gets to hit the reset with a talented young guard and Miller, Portland (in their own convoluted way) gives Dame a better chance at competing by adding a talented forward, NY gets their secondary ball handler and adds another asset for a star trade(Would be sick to nab Caruso also). 3 alone is not worth Randle, and the Knicks should be looking to add established players. Adding a team with a star that could look to tank, with the 3 pick makes way more sense than the Knicks adding Brandon Miller to the roster.
That would leave us a little thin at the 4 but Rose would still have the offseason to adjust. Maybe a guy like OG Annunoby? He could start at the 4 and would cost way less than the ask at the deadline.
I like and want OG but not to be the primary 4. Rather he run as a 3 and small ball 4. Not gonna lie, if it costs RJ to get OG then I’m all for it. That’s better shooting and defense

In what world is Jerami Grant better than Julius Randle?
When these trade posts occur, do people take into consideration everything changes after next offseason with the second tax apron and the changes in FA? Not to mention the fact that whether you choose to accept reality or not, Randle was a major factor in a team that made it to the second round.
What owner is going to allow Leon Rose to make a trade that intentionally makes them worse just to get rid of Randle? Unless a star comes back who is an upgrade, Rose isn’t going to put himself on the hot seat by trading Randle without a legit superstar coming back.
I saw a trade where we get Saddiq Bey, John Collins, and a 2nd rounder for Randle. That was the only one that raised an eyebrow for me. I’d prefer to run in back and aim for a great FA signing in the next 2 years
Anfernee Simons.
