This is a Sixers reporter saying this so it feels very very likely Harden is gone this summer. Philly has no means to replace Harden if he walks. What’s the significance for the Raptors?
1. One less top tier team in the East. If the Raps (for better or for worse…) choose to not rebuild and try to improve this current team, there’s one fewer contender now.
2. On the flip side of that point, Houston suddenly has a drive to compete. There’s been some reports that they might trade their 4th pick, so this could become another possible destination in a Pascal trade. If they become serious about it, that could cause a bidding war between them and Portland.
3. One less team that could pursue Fred VanVleet. I was surprised by the lack of Fred-to-Houston talk this season give their need for a PG and vets, and an abundance of cap space. There was some talk but Orlando was more heavily rumoured. Houston signing Harden would take most of their cap space and take them out as a potential FVV suitor. Less leverage for Fred in free agency negotiations.

Not good for us if Morey blows it up and looks to trade Embiid to suitors (Portland).
If this is true, this will indicate the Houston team shopping some of their younger guys for more established talent. I could see them shopping Sengun as I don’t see him as a good fit next to Harden
This is hilarious to me considering the 76ers were offered Jaylen Brown for Ben Simmons, and are quite literally receiving nothing in return now.

This has always been such a strange idea to me ever since rumors first started circulating. And that goes for both Harden and Houston.
I guess they’re going to try and make some immediate upgrades to support Harden and make a run of it. Should be interesting

Not too sad to see the superstars leave the Raptors’ division and go out west. Raptors as currently constructed should now rank ahead of Philly and Brooklyn. Maybe not a crazy idea to hold off blowing up the roster.

I don’t think it would necessarily mean Houston will be trying to compete right away. Harden might have decided he doesn’t care much about a ring and just wants to play out his days in Houston cause he likes it there. And it’s not a big deal for the Rockets to pay him as they develop their players.
Lowe went over this. There’s talk that Houston will do this but it’s a move that makes zero sense for both sides. I think it’s more a thing coming out of Harden’s camp to drive up his price with the 76ers (which I get).
But why would Houston, who is in the middle of building a young core, spend everything on a 32 year old guard who lost 2 steps for FOUR YEARS. And why would he essentially check out for the last 4 years of his careers on a team with no hope of going anywhere in the near future. Like, that team is dogshit currently.
