[ESPN] Wembanyana: “And there could be no more perfect occasion for me to win my first title with the French national team. My goal,” he says, “is to beat Team USA in the final.”

Giberné, the writer and broadcaster, recalls a conversation he had with Wembanyama last fall, when the two discussed how difficult it will be to win an NBA championship in his first season.

It will be so challenging, Giberné says, and Wembanyama agrees. But then his eyes flicker.

“You know the Olympics are in Paris in 2024,” Wembanyama tells Giberné. “And there could be no more perfect occasion for me to win my first title with the French national team.”

Wembanyama smiles.

“My goal,” he says, “is to beat Team USA in the final.”

Would be epic. Gobert at the 5, Embiid at the 4, Wemby at the 3. Good luck scoring

  2. ColdCocking

Wemby/Embiid/Gobert could be a fierce team.

Who’s even the best American player at this point? Gotta be Tatum?

Classic feel good thing to say. Can’t wait for his welcome to the nba moment.

Canada needs to get all their guys there because then the US could have multiple teams to compete with. There’s so many high end guards in the league now that are from there

Honestly US basketball has never been weaker, especially since Curry and Durant will most likely opt out due to age.

Their best player is Tatum, and they will have nobody to compete with the big of Serbia, France, and Greece.

France actually has a stack youth upcoming era. Should be fun

I really wish we could get something else besides the olympics as the peak national competition. Basketball is getting big enough, I think they can make it big enough to be interesting. People just need to lean into something like the FIBA world cup as being the premier competition.

As a fan, I love that it’s actually starting to become competitive.

Perfect time for it. USA basketball is in a bad spot.

I hope the level of competition spurs more interest and prestige in international basketball.

Then maybe Canada will start taking it seriously and their stars will show up to tournaments. I want to see a squad led by SGA, Murray, and Wiggins. That’s a hell of a start to a team.

  11. This can be the beginning of Euro and USA teams going at it more. Just need the sponsors to be on board and to do it in the off-season

You are playing in the 6th best team in the French league, calm down.

Based on the Euro where they wouldn’t have made it further than the quarter finals had their opponents not choked hard … No. Not happening. France will always find a way to waste great talent.

  14. StickyGoodness

That would be sweet to have two Spurs beat Team USA in the Olympics for the gold.

We’ve been looking at this all wrong. This whole time we’ve said he’s LeBron by hype, KD by playstyle, Duncan by pedigree, or Parker by cultural impact. Turns out he’s actually trying to be Frederick Weis!

The best prospect since Ben Simmons.

If Canada could ever not choke in qualifying they’d have a really fun team
