Boston Celtics lose Game 7 at home to Miami Heat … the season is over

The Celtics started the game strong enough, but the shots never really fell for them. Meanwhile, Miami bounced back from a slow start, gained confidence, and ran away with it at the end. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal looks at the game, some of the particularly rough performances, and why the Celtics might regret missing out on this opportunity.

  1. Once Tatum got hurt it made me feel okay that we were probably going to lose. Even if they had progressed there's no way this team is beating Denver especially with Tatum hurt. Brown's handles and turnover issues are just weird at this point. Wouldn't be surprised if they tried to move him and Smart plus 3 1sts for Dame. If Joe is going to be the coach next season then they need to go get Dame else this live by the 3 die by the 3 will keep us from the ultimate goal. And Joe has this annoying thing of making unnecessary subs when the guys on the floor are playing well and making a run like in the 3rd Q after the Heat called timeout after a D White basket to cut it to 8, he subbed Rob out and the offense stalled after that again.

  2. as a coach, if tatum disnt look good and celtics suppose to be deep then mazzula should have sat tatum

  3. The C's need to clean house from top to bottom(management to players). I would not be surprised if Brown is traded(and really he should be). He is not worth the Max contract. He's been in the league for 7 years with no signs of having a high basketball IQ. Smart should go too. A completely overrated team. Soft as tissue paper and as Charles Barkley said 'Dumbass' play.

  4. Well, Jaylen overall is still one of the best players in the NBA. Yes, on the handle, but also…and I don't know how to say it–we've all seen "overthinking/unfocused Jaylen." Dunno what to say, other than, when he's off, he can really be off. Maybe, like his overall game, he can just slowly improve on that.

Yes on Brogden. Think we've underestimated how much this limited the C's ability to generate O these past two games when they struggled.

Grant. I was one of the first to say this–even back when he was in Joe's good graces: Grant has a high basketball IQ…and can also be a flat-out dumb@ss. I absolutely think he's the classic case of a guy who became ever-more obsessed with his $^&@! contract instead of becoming a better player during the home stretch. Perfectly fine with letting him walk if he tries to insist he's worth $20M –I didn't think that 4 months ago, but I do now. Maybe the silver lining is that he he made his asking price plummet.

Yes, there is clearly more to the story.

  5. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆historyt ass scum bags!!! Keep dreaming 8 seed with no Hero or OLADIPO molly whoop you cream bags!! 😂😂😂 Let's go HEAT🔥🔥🔥🔥

  6. I try to think of this like 1988, when the Pistons finally got past the C's, were CLEARLY better than the Lakers but couldn't get past them yet. It took them another year. Hoping….

  7. The fact that the Heat does so well with so many undrafted players such as Martin means the team has a great player development program. The Celtics need to get a good player development program in place this summer. The C's have talent, just take it to the next level with a program.

  8. Well, I certainly don't have a problem with running back the same TALENT. No one should. The "we gotta shake it up" crowd can…well keep spinning on their armchairs. I do wonder if that includes Gallo though. This team w/Gallo? I'll take that vs. anybody.

Look, talent wasn't and won't be the issue. It's the psyche. Now, I know in this age of hot takes, there are a legion of people who've decided "Tatum and Brown don't have 'it.'" Those people are idiots who don't play and know nothing; likely have never done anything truly difficult in life. Yes, dealing with pressure productively CAN be learned. I seem to remember LBJ struggling mightily with it until he won his first ring–just one example of many.

So, I'm okay with running it back or running it back minus Grant (although I do worry how that affects wear and tear on Al over a season).

  9. Ultimately I think a lot of this is a result of too much analytics focus for the offensive game-plan. From the beginning of the season the offense has looked like the old Houston Rockets when James Harden was there and you would think after watching it fail you wouldn’t design an offense to look that way. Jayson Tatum came into the league as a very polished player who can score at all 3 levels but for some reason he turned into a layups and 3s only player. That works against bad teams , but against good teams who take away layups, you can’t have your best player limited to 1 scoring option and expect to win. The whole offense needs to be diversified and they really need to look at the regular season as the time to build up good habits, because they still feel the affects of the “your turn , my turn” days. If Jayson can get his midrange back and become a player who can get a go to reliable shot for those crunch minutes, this team can only benefit. But this analytics first, predictable, three ball volume centric approach has failed already in Houston, and it will continue to fail in the playoffs NO MATTER WHERE IT IS .

  10. Thank you John for working so hard all season to bring us the best Celtics content. I really appreciate all that you do. You’ve spent many nights late at the Garden on little sleep & it does not go unnoticed. Thank you to Tom as well and all the great guests you’ve had during the season. And thanks to everyone for your upvotes, opinions and being the best fans in sports! So many negative things I could say right now, but the bottom line is Miami executed when it counted and we did not. Consistency is the biggest issue with this team. Also Malcolm Brogdon’s postgame comments were spot on-give then a listen. He knows that this team needs it’s defensive identity back. Love you folks!☘️💚🔒

  11. Jimmy winning series MVP is reminiscent of Kobe winning '10 Finals MVP after going 6 for 24. Cuz Kobe.

  12. Thank you John, great season and I'll be around listening to the pod this off-season, I really appreciate your work. ☘️

Now big question marks this off-season….

  13. THANK YOU FOR HATING US!! THANK YOU FOR DOUBTING US!! .. "YA ALMOST HAD IT…. YOU GOTTA BE QUICKER THAN THAT" 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂 #HEATNATION

  14. Loser franchise… Y'all last chip was in '08 🤣🤣😂😂 pathetic.. MIAMI HEAT IS YOUR DADDY 😎

  15. JB needs to learn how to go left, dribble with his left hand or stop dribbling

  16. Celts in 9. Don't worry, it's not just Heat fans, it's all us haters, who don't mind giving a failed player some views.

  17. I don’t care if we don’t win the chip, I’m just glad we stopped you clover clowns from getting a chance 😂 Better luck next year, idiots.

  18. Boston sports is already full of legendary combacks and championships across the board. They dont need to have every historic comeback in the books

  19. This team managed to blow MULTIPLE games per series throughtout the playoffs to lesser opponents.
Maturity and focus have been lacking while sloppiness and arrogance are abundant.
They managed to take the Heat lightly again. The same team that had beat them in 2020 and almost did it again last year.
I think Ime had them on the right track and that their mental development has stagnated ever since he left.
Brad Stevens has quite some paths that he can take and I hope he implements what must be done.
This was the most frustrating year of the Jays era. A TRUE FAILURE…

  20. Onto next year Celtics fans! Now we need management to sign Jaylen Brown to a long term contract!💚☘️#18
Let’s go Denver Nuggets kick Jimmy Butler’s butt!🤣

  21. The reality of the situation was this team was never a championship team and was never gonna be a championship team. No championship team gets down 0-3 to the goddamn 8th seed. You can make up whatever excuses you want. The signs were all there against the Hawks and Sixers. The very definition of paper champs.
