Have the Nuggets and Heat given the Nets a blueprint going forward?

With the NBA Finals starting on Thursday, the Locked on Nets guys take a look at both teams and what the Nets can learn from each on future roster building and management. Both the Nuggets and the Heat provide a window into teams that have clearly stayed the course organizationally, building around not only superstars but a mindset and structure as well. It is something the Nets seemed to be on the path for over the course of a few years, but have clearly strayed.

What lessons can Sean Marks and company take going into their own plans this summer and beyond when it comes to guys like Mikal Bridges, Ben Simmons, Cameron Johnson and even Ben Simmons? Do the Nets even have a long range plan for success?

  1. Hey everyone. Heard the Detroit Pistons just signed Monty Williams to a huge money contract to coach their squad. Hearing that Cam Johnson could be a big target for pistons to sign him and reunite him with Monty.

As important as it is for Brooklyn to retain cam Johnson Brooklyn has to also realize that a year from now Nic Claxton will require a bigger money deal and given Brooklyn future is not as clear will they commit that much money to Cam and Claxton?

The Detroit Pistons are in an interesting team given they have the fifth pick in the first round of the draft. That would be an automatic must in any possible sign and trade deal. Also the Pistons have some big men prospects in Marvin Bagley lll and James Wiseman who could be appealing to Brooklyn as far as getting bigger as a team.

At the end of the day retaining cam Johnson is a top priority. But both the Pistons and Houston Rockets will definitely try to make a big offer to try to sway Cam Johnson away from Brooklyn. Will Brooklyn ultimately commit to Cam Johnson long term is the bigger question…..

  2. As far as Miami Heat goes people have to realize that it's a rare for a team mostly compromised of undrafted players to make a deep playoff run especially to the finals 🔥…

If Miami has proven one thing especially since the Lebron James era is that Heat culture hasn't changed. Even when the Heat lost in the playoffs the last few years they just keep coming back playing harder and proving people wrong. Congrats to them for overcoming that adversity.

As far as the Denver Nuggets go, without Nikola Jokic this team is nowhere near a championship team.

They have a good group of veterans with various playoff experience such as Aaron Gordon, KCP, Bruce Brown, Jeff Green and even DeAndre Jordan.

More importantly the top secondary players Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. are healthy and have delivered….

If anything Brooklyn blueprint should be to develop the new prospects they can draft and utilize some g league talent.

Lastly they do have a new skilled core that can take them to the next level….

  3. Yep the blueprint is
    1. Value your draft picks. The biggest stars on both teams werent picked high in the draft (outside of jamal murray who was 7th). Bam was mid teens, same for MPJ, Jimmy butler late rd 1 and joker rd 2. Not saying we will find a superstar that late in the draft but picks do matter and the organization should focus on zeroing in on talent and developing them. It sounds like beating a dead horse but none of these teams have gutted their team for stars, same goes for celtics, bucks, warriors etc.

    2. Chemistry and consistency matters. Jokic and murray have 7 yrs and 58 playoff games together. Jimmy and this heat core have been together for 4 seasons now and this is their 2nd title run in that span. Consantly patching and shaking up rosters over and over again isnt good long term. The teams that consistently make deep title runs (outside of lebron james teams) have years of chemistry: boston, warriors, bucks, heat, nuggets etc

    3. Coaching stability: erick spo has been in miami has the HC for 15 yrs, and mike malone for 8. The nets have had 3 HCs since the spring of 2020. You cannot continue to flip over the HC. Yes bad coaches must be fired but coaches need time to develop and build their culture

This is a formula that has been consistent throughout much of nba history. Yes you need superstars but when you look at the lakers dynasties in the 80s, the bulls, the lakars against in 00s and the warriors in 10's, these elements are the foundation of the culture that helps the superstars and supporting casts flourish.

  4. Agree completely with you guys on the patience part. I keep hearing people say "trade joe harris, trade ben simmons". Those contracts expire in the next yr and 2 respectively. Keep developing your guys. Be patient and tactical.

  5. Blueprint is draft 3rd pick while ee can build around assets we get fro. Portland.. Rumors Brooklyn going after Lavine.. This Ben input and dont br durprise KAT coming to Brooklyn too.. another one of ben Simmons friends 😊

  6. Jimmy Butler was the 30th pick in the first round. Jokic was a 2nd round pick. That’s crazy. One will win finals mvp in 2 weeks.

  7. Nuggets have probably the best offensive player in the nba. Hard to replicate.

Heat on the other hand, there is something to be said about the level of consistency that playing together gets teams.

To be a team that can come from the middle, the competitive advantage has to come from 1. Coaching 2. hustle 3. Connectivity We can build that
