  1. Ted’s slow talking grates after a while, but that’s how a lot of “ceo” types talk. There’s a lot to unpack behind that, but bottom line it grates because the urgency the fans have to create something just feels completely unfelt on his end. I get that it’s a complex situation and involves every decision from the color of the rug on the way into COA on up to the Winger hire, but it just starts to come off as indifference for me. But whatever. I just hope by the time the season starts we’re not watching the same old same old.

Michael Winger all the way at the end:

    >I hope that this is my last stop. This is where I want to be. Ted is the guy I want to be with. This is the city I want to be in.

Quote of the pod from Ted Leonsis: “I was frustrated. I really was reflecting to how I felt I’d let down the fan base. Everyone knows who they need to report to. I have to report to the fans, and our fans have been loyal…I don’t feel like I was giving the fans something to cheer for”

Glad Ted has the introspection to say straight up that he gave himself failing grades as an owner over the past few years. Also acknowledged that the team was bad “by design” back when we tanked for John Wall, Brad and OPJ. So let’s dispel with the “we will never ever tank” quote because that was obviously just a “I don’t want to get fined” answer that an owner should give when asked about tanking. Don’t get fined like Cuban, folks.

Overall, I was impressed by how candid he was about his failures running the franchise. I do think he feels remorseful and wanted to invest as many resources as possible into this new front office to give us a strong foundation to win a championship.

What was most striking to me was his admission that Tommy had a plan, but then some trade would come down the wire at the deadline and Tommy would pivot to chase that instead. Ted says he didn’t feel like he had the right to say no, probably due to how tight the deadlines are and not wanting to get in the way of his front office. So I’ll hope that Winger is more principled about his approach to this roster.

Winger’s section is fairly standard. He’s still dodging the question of rebuild or continue down the current path, but he very pointedly says there’s no point in continuing a plan that hasn’t worked. He adds some stuff about how the Nuggets have succeeded by making small changes to their roster (signing Bruce Brown and KCP) which took them from good to great, but I don’t think he sees our current team in that way. He also has the context of the “when healthy” excuse not working with the Clippers since Kawhi and PG have not shown that they can deliver on that promise. Overall I like the way he talks about the team and wanting to deliver championships. Seems like a great guy on a personal level.
