If the 76ers pay the Rockets a couple 2nds or something to turn Harden into a S+T in the offseason, the 76ers could S+T for Fred without having to salary match. I still don’t know if they have anything worth helping them out for. Jaden Springer? Maybe Melton? It’s rough out there.
We could have just traded him at the trade deadline and avoided this situation. Now we’ll be lucky to get pennies on the dollar for him in a sign and trade with Philly. Watch us get Shake Milton and a late first in next years draft 😂
This would make sense to me if Houston has a high interest in either Harden or Fred. If they can get Harden, then that is their first option. Fred is their fallback. Philly likely knows that Harden has a mutual interest in returning to Houston.
Philly can’t replace Harden easily. They’d have to revoke all their FAs to get any type of cap space. So, to replace Harden, they reach out to us to S&T Fred to them (maybe Fred opts in?), they S&T Harden, and we get some minor draft capital from both teams. Philly gets a PG that knows Nurse’s system and Fred gets paid + is on a contender.
I think we do this because it is better than just letting Orlando or Houston sign Fred outright without getting a return. Also, if we are rebuilding, I think most of our work will be done on Draft Night. So we don’t have to worry too much about FA outside of some minor signings and re-signing Poeltl.
