They could’ve went in many directions coaching wise. I think that idea has obviously been pounded in our heads. But I really like Darko so far. Look can we say he will win 4 more championships in Toronto, be here for 20 years, have multiple all stars, this and that? Idk. We can’t predict anything. But I do like where the front office went with the hire. They lost track of their top level development over the last 2-4 years. And yes you can say well the reason for the championship was trading for guys like Kawhi, Danny, and Marc. Who all were well respected vets when traded for. But look at the team around them. Traded for Kyle and we developed his existing game into a winning, bulldog, defensive problem style. OG, Norm, Pascal, and Fred. All drafted and developed and played a big role. Serge even. Wasn’t a 3 point threat in OKC/ORL. Comes here and is an all around big man who can play in and out because the staff unlocked it. Even Demar and Jonas. Simply put we lost our touch with developing players. It has shown. And his expertise is development. I’m not saying which ever young player who is on the roster will be an all star in the next season or 2. But growth I believe will be shown. Another aspect I enjoy is his deep coaching background. He’s 44 and been coaching since 16. When you coach for that long you see a lot. And experience a lot. That’s rare. Look I have no idea what we do this off-season. It will be interesting. But what I do know is you gotta have a solid coach to start somewhere and I believe they found him.
