CBA Mavs explained it really well with this thread :
I am in a pretty busy season so I may not be able to write an article on it.
But I’ve seen many suggest a sign-and-trade for Grant Williams.
– Boston is already above the 1st tax apron with 11 players. 9.2 mil from the 2nd tax apron.
– They want to use their Tax MLE https://t.co/4mmeDcq86f— Mavs(New)CBA (@CBAMavs) June 25, 2023
>Boston is already above the 1st tax apron with 11 players. 9.2 mil from the 2nd tax apron.
>They want to use their Tax MLE
>Boston can sign up to 4 players. Maybe go with 3… 2 players at apron + 5 mil Tax MLE would squeeze them right below 2nd apron
A) They aren’t matching a Full MLE offer sheet for Grant Williams
B) They don’t want to blow over the 2nd apron for Reggie Bullock or Tim Hardaway Jr.
>I don’t believe a sign-and-trade of Grant Williams to the Mavericks will happen (without us adding a 1st rounder). That would be dumb for us.
I personally think we will throw the MLE to Barnes and Bruce Brown and see who we can get . Maybe use the BAE to for a big like Alex Len and call it a day.

Barnes and brown aren’t signing here on the MLE.
If we can salary dump THJ elsewhere it works and the Celtics would get a nice TPE for their trouble. Of course this also means loose THJ’s scoring.
Unless Kyrie takes a discount we can’t even offer the full MLE.
I agree on Grant Williams and the S&T
Pretty doubtful about the assumption that they will want to use their tax MLE vs keeping Grant at a full MLE level contract. Yeah, they’ll be in the 2nd apron but they will also be looking to deal Brogdon’s money. And the harsher 2nd apron penalties start next year not this one.
I think unless someone swoops in with something closer to 15AAV, like 4/60m, they’ll just keep him, at MLE levels and look for ways to trim cash another way.
Someone will take our full MLE and Mavs will stretch waive Javale if that’s what it takes.
S&T for Kuz might also be a possibility but will cost us a pick.
it was unlikely ever since they traded for KP imo. they would be over the 2nd apron if they retained Williams or take a contract matching his. if mavs want to sign Williams, it will have to be the full MLE. and mavs made sure they get the full MLE when they traded Bertans
edit: it will have to be thru free agency, not trade
is he saying that the celtics wouldn’t match the offer sheet of a full mle? i just don’t see them letting him walk for nothing
The plan was basically shut the moment they used the Bertrans TPE. That was the only way to get Boston to use the sign and trade and not take money back.
