Boston Celtics trade Grant Williams to Dallas Mavericks

Grant Williams has been traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a 3 team deal that sends Reggie Bullock to San Antonio and a few second round picks to Boston. That’s all. Why would Brad Stevens do a deal like that? John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss the trade, how it really changes Boston, and why this is what the new CBA is meant to do.

  1. Hey Mavs fans chiming in.. curb your enthusiasm because you still have Cancer Kyrie on your roster.

  2. Hauser getting a big role that's what this tells me moves better off ball. better shooter and u don't really loose much on defense Hauser handle himself good last season.

  3. As a Dallas fan, I'm really happy to have Grant Williams! I think he fits even better with the Mavericks, and I think his offensive numbers are going to go up considerably.

  4. Conflicted….for one, I think stripping down the Celtics, from the players that cause confusion from the inconsistent minutes, is a good risk, but man….why do I feel like the Celtics are losing something that you can not get back.

  5. I’m no expert in the CBA nor anything related to contracts at all but this seems a bit odd of what we get in return. Either Brad knows what he’s doing or is setting himself up to secure a significant role player. Either way, I will say that the Celtics defence has looked lacklustre even when Ime was around. The finals felt like they were gassed out and couldn’t keep up that switching defence especially with such a short lineup. My thoughts are that we want to balance the defensive scheme so that EVERYONE takes ownership. Sure we lose grit and toughness but we need everyone else to step up.

A part of the big loss with losing Smart was that he was such a defensive anchor but he can’t be out there 48 minutes. We have the athleticism and the length it’s going to be up to the entire team to step up.

Also, I felt that teams have been exposing our switching defence in the playoffs. It’s quite taxing and I really felt especially in the Miami series it took us out of our offensive schemes. We’re a great team in transition and can play at a quick pace. Often when we switch we end up having bigs close out shooters for the opposing teams roll man to get to the basket guarded by a smaller player. It got corrected with some better coordination but it’s so fragile and if one thing goes wrong it’s an easy bucket. Part of Miami’s inability to just will themselves back into the game against Denver was that drop coverage was used well against Miami. We need to learn to guard where necessary and drop when necessary. Simply switching all the time makes us one dimensional. We relied too heavily on Grant and Marcus to carry us defensively.

  6. Brad definitely got some cooking coz the bench is still kinda weak at the wing and no defined pg

  7. Interesting move, feels like cost cutting or they have something else brewing. Probably package those picks for better one?

  8. knives out? really? she vomits when she lies? that's your example of good writing and a satisfying conclusion? no wonder you "write" about boston….i bet TLJ was your fav star wars film too

  9. i will certainly agree that boston has gotten screwed by the CBA, given that the guys you're losing are drafted players, and the team is being punished although it did things "the right way".

so, can the boston guys FINALLY FINALLY stop slurping steph and the warriors? since it's teams like GS and the clippers brought this on? to all the bill simmons/zach lowes/etc, do you finally understand that GS is your enemy too?

  10. More useless second round pics. Nice job. Smdh. I believe now they have 87 second round pics over the next 3 years 🤣

  11. Celtics should change name to boston cheaptics. Traded grant for a 2nd round pick because your too cheap to resign him smh pathetic. Celtics have 7 rotational players now rest are trash who will be sitting on bench come playoffs

  12. They're blaming the CBA when it should be that there are players getting max or crazy contracts that aren't deserved. Now teams are going to have to actually be smart with the contracts they're giving out. No more abusing the cap and maybe it will cut down on the epidemic of player created super teams too.

  13. Grant isnt worth 53 Million and Wyc aint paying a tax bill for the same amount just to keep Grant. Its pretty simple. He will pay it for a star only

  14. Nice to know so many commenters either didn't watch or don't understand the WORDS John spoke (English mastery is a dying art, true enough): there's a difference between "cost cutting" and maximizing the utility of the dollars you're spending. Is Grant worth $40m in salary and taxes? Only if someone, say, the COACH WHO DECIDES, thinks he's gonna, y'know, PLAY THE DUDE. They are not "cutting costs" just to cut costs–Brad's been pretty clear that they will spend, and the man never BSs.

  15. I absolutely can see them using Al the way you said. Joe's gonna need to be better in minutes management for sure.

  16. MAYBE putting pressure on these guys IS part of the plan. Being comfortable is not something that has served them well. Not saying this would excuse Brad not still making another move here…but I don't mind AT ALL a concerted effort to put more pressure on the current players. Rob isn't a baby–if he can't handle this, or stay healthy, then they were always gonna have a problem no matter what.

  17. On the Warriors: don't forget them having the fortune of that salary cap spike at the EXACT moment KD was available. Lightning in a bottle indeed.

  18. The Celtics have 3 guys being paid 30+ a year and are blaming CBA rules for not being able to have Grant Williams also.

Brogdan and White are 40mil between the pair of them and they want Williams too.

Its actually laughable to blame CBA rules when the team is spending 140mil on 5 players.

The funny thing is the luxury tax is set at 165mil and from just 7 players, the Celtics are paying 160mil.

But the Celtics fans will say its the new CBA to blame.

The truth is the Celtics couldnt afford Grant Williams and had to let him go. Everyone knew this but they wanted something and managed to get 2 second round picks which is obviously below value for a player like Grant Williams.
