When you’re highly successful at your job, people upstairs in other organizations usually take notice. If he continues to develop these young guys and even a couple have a breakout year, then that means Handy will start getting national recognition for the great job he’s doing here, and some rebuilding team will give him a shot to lead their own young players. Seems like he’s ready for a chance to show the league that he can both develop guys and lead a team. I’ll be sad and happy for him if a smart organization steals him away.

Maybe Coach the Lakers 👀
Players development and in game decisions are two completely different disciplines. I’m not telling he can’t succeed as head coach, but the success doing one thing doesn’t mean he would be good doing other thing.
I believe Tex Winter was a great example. Basketball genius that was also great teaching fundamentals, but he was a better assistant than head coach.
I’d love to keep him doing what he does.
My hope is that Ham isn’t long term coach. I actually think they structured his contract to align with James and AD.
James and AD can both opt out next free agency period.
Although it seems it has been fairly good relationship with Klutch I think they will also be relieved to have a chance to move on from them but they will help each other in a major way one last time.
James and AD opt out but then do sign and trade to form some super team somewhere else.
Lakers get young players and decent amount of draft picks back from said trades
Ham signed a 4 year contract but coaches rarely coach their last year of contract (2025-2026 for ham)without an extension.
So his last year will be 2024-2025 after James and AD get traded. with no James and no AD just Reaves and a bunch of young kids running around. Lakers go 20-62 Ham gets let go.
With mostly young players + upcoming draft picks (after James and AD trades) Ham would be the ideal coach for the Lakers starting 2025 -2026.
To be fair to Rui, Handy doesn’t deserve all the credit for “developing” him. Rui was a better player in Washington but never got recognition due to the small market he was in.
Long over due!
He will eventually be the inaugural head coach for the Las Vegas “whatever Lebron decides to name them!”
Not if it’s in LA
He deserves an opportunity
He said handy
Hes gone once bron leaves
Phil handy is one of the best development coaches, when he learns a little more in game and game management skills he will be unstoppable. Players love this guy. I think he might be a good GM or player dev president for a org
They should keep paying Handy whatever the hell they need to to keep him in the position he’s in
