Boston Celtics trade Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis, picks

The Boston Celtics looked like they had a deal to send out Malcolm Brogdon and get Kristaps Porzingis. That fell apart, and suddenly the trade became a deal to send Marcus Smart out. The Celtics ultimately added Porzingis and two first round picks, making the deal a good value. John Karalis breaks down the deal, how Porzingis fits, and the sting of losing Smart.

  1. Borgdon’s injury CLEARLY affected his shooting. The clippers are probably nervous that his shot won’t ever be the same. It looked horrible when they played him against miami. They never should have

  2. This feels like losing the girl you had the most fun with in order to be with the girl who makes you a better man.

  3. I wanted smart to be a Celtic forever!! :/ 100% right that Tatum and brown should not be the ones carrying the ball down the court and this last playoff run is proof of that, for some reason both of them commit the most random turnovers (not like where the defense made a good/great play, but just sloppy ball handling and passes). We need smart

  4. I thought the same thing, if the Celtics won atleast ONE, just ONE, ring in the last 5 seasons then they could keep the team. I love how the Cs are sticking with their team and not trading everyone all the time(which is rare these days) but you’re right, every year we are a top 5 team but somehow lose in the playoffs so obviously something has to change and we were going to have to move some of our stars around. It was going to have to be Hordford, Smart, Brogdon, Tatum, or Brown, and it seems like the Celtics are trying to find a way to keep both Brown and Tatum. Everyone is saying we can’t afford to keep both bc of max deals, but why not??? The most historic team in the NBA with the most championships can’t afford to superstar players but yet tons of others teams can?? Some teams even have 3 superstars in the past and present and some have 4 super good players which is like the same thing money wise

  5. He's a rock solid player, has dog in him, a glue type but he is not that talented – Marcus. The team is now Jason's.

  6. All these years they was trading around Marcus smart. and the whole time it was Marcus smart 🤓. and I was saying that for a long time.because he always choke in the championships 🏆 and in the finals too.and on regular games that's important going to the playoffs.and al horford and grant Williams is another problem. Because if you watch the regular highlights instead of there personal highlights how they play. you can see Marcus smart doesn't score enough. and he be on the floor playing so many minutes. and his defense and steals are good.but he does not punish other teams by not shooting enough 3s.and if you look at all his games that's important.he look like a sitting duck.and I think 🤔 The Celtics owner and brad did the right move getting rid of Marcus smart. except firing ime udoka for a woman that's married and not loyal to her husband and don't have a leash on her and udoka was not official married but she still work there😂. but anyway back to smart.he had to go.and the Celtics will be there again in the championship 🏆.and we will see if Marcus smart was the problem.

  7. It's not a GOOD deal. This is a MASTERCLASS deal. If I was a C's fan I'd be sad to see him go but elated for title contention. Brad getting 2 first rounders AND also now having to more open roster spots is valuable as well and nobody is discussing that.

  8. Porzingis defense is Better then yall give credit for. Plus he one of best pick and role defenders

  9. To hear anything negative here other than missing Marcus sounds insane to an outsider. You retain Derrick White and the 6th man of the year in Brogdon, you gain 2 first round picks, you open up 2 additional roster spots, and the best player in the trade. KP had his healthiest season at 23PPG, made 49% of his shots, so every other shot he takes goes in. This trade is the epitome of a slam dunk when emotions are taken out. The rest of the NBA fas are bummed at how the rich got richer today. Great job by Brad Stevens

  10. I am thrilled we got rid of Marcus Smart I’ve been wanting us to trade him for many years now he’s never been a great point guard. He’s been an amazing role player.

  11. Great take John! I went to school with you back at Shea and you were a fantastic player and a great basketball mind. So glad I found your podcast!

  12. This one hurts, not quite as bad as IT, but man…. we'll have to wait and see but I can't but feel they will be saying the line from Job in Arrested Development "I've made a terrible mistake…" For me, I loved Smart, he was heart and soul, he loved Boston – and it just hurts – wanted him to win a championship here and wanted him to retire here. On paper it may look good, but a team isn't made on paper. At least we still have Derrick White.

  13. Let's see how Boston will welcome KP… it's totally unexpected for him

  14. We traded Smart basically for two 1st rd picks and a 7'3" center that plays like Horford but is much younger, taller, more athletic. Defense will be better, team is taller and the offense will flow. Thanks Marcus, but this is a great trade. Kudos Steven's, now go get a legit quick bench instant offense guy. Like a Monk, Clarkson type. Love to see Andre Jackson and Sanogo from UConn get drafted by the Cs

  15. I feel kind of bad for Gallo. Signs with the C's, gets hurt while playing for Italia, rehabs to be ready for next season, then gets traded without ever playing for Boston

  16. 😂😂😂 Bam adebayo is 5 wins vs 1 loss against Kristaps…..let's go Heat. Another finals assured

  17. felt my soul leave my body when I saw the trade update to being smart going out.

  18. GOOD TRADE WE ADD LENTH, POST TRUE POST GAME, better 3pt point shooter,,,,got younger,,,,,smart added a lot ,,with heart and soul on defense but the team defense will get better with playing ther roles as a teams..,,,,it will kill the one on one game because smart made it diffcult because on over handling the ball with white the celtics will have more ball rotation with a soild post game

  19. I am so sad! Marcus is the floor diver, the veteran heart and the soul of the team. I hate this trade! Thank you Marcus for your hustle and heart.

  20. I thought after some time I’d feel better about this trade but the truth is that we lost the best Celtic, not best player, best Celtic on this team. I understand Brad’s decision, yes we got great value back.

John, you’re absolutely right. This was a gut punch to Celtics fans, regardless of whether you like or dislike Smart. He embodied a true teammate and asset to the organisation. He tirelessly put the team first and constant changed himself for what the team needed. He learned to become a happier and more positive version of himself and really grew into a better person. I hope this hits as hard or even harder to the Jays. They’re now fully responsible for this team, they have to carry that torch and I hope it lights a fucking huge fire in their hearts.

The real shame is if we win and Marcus isn’t on that podium. I guess everything has a cost but this one stings so much. The entire time I’ve followed this team, this hurts the most.

Forever beloved and trusted, Marcus Smart.

  21. Thank you Marcus Smart for the years of your hard work and dedication. I'm very sorry to see you go ☘️☘️ you'll always be a Celtic to me. C's forever ❤

  22. Hate to see Smart go but understand why the Js are back to their true position and we are big on both ends with every reason to attack LFG

  23. Fkn devastated. No D next year. Just jacking up 1,000 3s. I don't get this trade. Hope I'm wrong. What has that locker room just lost!?!

  24. I understand the sadness about Smart’s departure, it sucks! BUT, dude, we now have a top-5 point forward, a top-10 wing, & a top-5 center at 25, 26, & 27 yo, all just entering their prime!! Any GM worth anything would’ve made that trade without blinking!

  25. We saw how effective the two man pick and roll game with Tatum and a big can be with Rob Williams, so I think Porzingis will be a great fit. He spaces the floor too. Injuries are a concern but I don’t think we could have done any better

  26. See ya smart. Thanks for your effort but you should have been our ultimate 6th nab, as a starter you were always just a Liability

  27. How many times did our offense go ice cold with 5-2 minutes left in the game?Didn’t it always feel like Marcus was the one to break the ice? While Tatum was putting up step back threes, and brown was dribbling the ball of his foot, Marcus seemed to always post up the smaller guard and put up a great floater or layup. I remember those shots being sooooooo key to us getting back the momentum and closing those games out. I love smart and he did give us juice. That being said. White, prozingod, williams, brown, and Tatum is a bonkers starting 5 that I can’t turn down lmaooo.

  28. The most important ability is availability. What are the odds that the Unicorn will be healthy for the playoffs? 30%?

He was unhappy with the Knicks. He failed in Dallas. He was the one of the best players on a lousy team in Washington. He’s a taller version of Kelly O. I’m not impressed.

  29. A shocker,. I get the point of Porz being a real upgrade (and I like him). But gut punching Marcus, the soul of the team, really Brad??? In a blame game, I'd rather have Jaylen gone. Hopefully karma is friendly, and Porz will not get hurt soon. (no more Hayward and Gallo BS.)

  30. We had smart for almost 10 years and almost work. We need someone like Porziņģis for it to work. I wish smart the best but dude I am so freaking excited to get Porziņģis. Have not been this excited since we got Garnet.
