[Botemps] Adam Silver says there is no point in the foreseeable future where he sees a possibility of a sovereign wealth fund being the controlling owner of an NBA team. He said the league believes its extremely important for individuals to be in charge of these teams.

“But they can own 49%. That’s cool with me”

  2. GOAT_Redditor

So I guess we’ll have to give all our money to a single user on here to buy the team and make decisions on behalf of us?

  3. bucsfan22ch

Why is it important for an individual to be in charge of these teams? Besides the GM of course

  4. asapshrank

Raptors are owned by a company tho lol

  5. hearthstonealtlol

Adam Silver told these private equity firms to get ready to learn Chinese.

  6. walterdog12

AKA get a glorified spokesperson that’ll stand in as the owner, but everyone knows the actual owners are whatever UAE billionaire/government.

  7. Rkenne16

Teams should just be owned by the city. At least then when they pay a billion dollars for a new stadium, they get direct profits.

  8. Someone_youd_admire

Can’t wait to see 47 year old LeBron getting paid 2 billion a year to play on some Saudi league team no one has ever heard of.

  9. ForoaKlanD

Translation: Saudi middleman will form a group to buy the Vegas team when they expand. They’ll probably have LeBron as the face of it. I recall seeing on r/Lakers that he went to UAE to meet with some billionaire so this probably had something do with it

    !RemindMe 4 years

  10. Snuggle__Monster

This is all about Saudi Arabia and their “Ignore the fucked up shit we do/have done and just enjoy our sports, yes?” tour

  11. PalletTownsDealer

    Adam silver: *too small morion*

  12. JCSeegars54

This is dumb the ccp deserves a team that will represent the people’s republic

  13. CapBrink

Money talks though. I’m worried they’ll just make an offer too big to ignore.

If a team gets sold for 6 bil, and the next is valued at 6.5 bil, what are the owners reactions going to be when that 10 bil offer comes in?

  14. MisterDisinformation

Good shit Silver. It’s gotta be fucking humiliating to be a Brit seeing their culture being sold off to the most evil people.

I already feel like a bit of a sucker giving my money to the uber wealthy NBA owners. I’m not sure I could stomach a Gulf tyrant.

  15. Single_Passenger

Well atleast on paper. I hope NBA gets spared from the whitewashing UAE is trying to do by buying/backing major sport teams across the globe.

  16. canseco-fart-box

Until they offer billions above asking price with a cut for sliver specifically

  17. Tabais123

Translation: We’re gonna need to see more zeros on that check

  18. ngmathew1234

If the money is right they will let them in just like the PGA did.

  19. Flat_News_2000

The saudis will find a spokesperson to funnel their money through.

  20. emulator01

It would be so cool to own a part of a team though… amirite?

  21. danorcs

Adam Silver is smart and correct

A franchise purchased by a SWF would be run by managers who will see things longer term and, because they don’t care about local fans, will just do what Hinkie did with The Process, until they get a player who can be dominant in the league for 20 years

Individuals matter, guys like Ballmer and Ishbia and Joe Tsai have their own timelines and would spend anything to see the success within the short time they have

The Clippers, Nets and maybe now the Suns haven’t had the success in the courts BUT they have been extremely entertaining and front row must see spectacle for the drama alone

Without these owners the teams won’t be making much of a splash at all, or at least not in a positive way

  22. “…which is why I’m proud to announce the new owner of the Charlotte Hornets, Mr. Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.”

  23. its only cool when white men do it not arabs!

  24. Salty_Watermelon

Silver will bend over for the right amount of money. Who’s going to put any faith in the man whose crowning achievement as commissioner is opening the floodgates for more and more ads. I’m pretty sure he has never enjoyed one second of watching basketball in his life.

  25. LazyAssedAmbassador

Saudis can buy the Bulls. I wouldn’t complain.

  26. paddiction

If the Saudis come in offering $100 billions dollars for a team you bet he’s selling

  27. bootorangutan

We’re not just doing this for money…..we’re doing it for a SHITLOAD of money!!

  28. BabelfishWrangler

Individuals?! To hell with that, expropriate the billionaires, make the NBA a co-op.

  29. lithomangcc

Knicks were good when owned by a large corporation they really have sucked since they were sold to an individual.(1990’s) The only team with a worse record this century are the team MJ sold this year.

  30. RVAIsTheGreatest

The conditions in place that led to what we saw with the PGA for example don’t exist as much in the NFL and NBA. I don’t see those two leagues with Saudi presence anytime soon. I would not be as surprised in hockey and baseball.

MLS fanbase leans very liberal, so that might be a roadblock to such a move in that sport.

  31. nonufwiendz

Lol silver always gonna bend down to whoever has the money anyways

  32. TurtlePowerBottom

I think the players should form a vanguard and seize ownership of the team themselves

  33. Nilez3104

The competition amongst owners is part of the nba game too

  34. JeanEtrineaux

Owners say this until an offer comes in that makes their franchise suddenly look significantly more valuable.
