[Slater] The Warriors are likely to take a patient approach before committing a guaranteed contract to somebody in that 14th slot. If nothing appealing enough materializes, team sources indicate that the Warriors are comfortable putting the spot up for grabs in a training camp competition.

From Slater’s Summer League [notebook](https://theathletic.com/4679031/2023/07/11/warriors-summer-league-roster-chris-paul/):

> They’re at least publicly maintaining the possibility of using all 15, but the heavy luxury tax implications and behind-the-scenes signals leave it as improbable. So, as it currently stands, there’s really only one more vacancy left on the roster.

> But there’s no urgency coming from the front office to fill it in the coming days. They went into free agency intent on settling two needs: an extra veteran hand in the backcourt and a reliable frontcourt option who could pass and shoot it. Cory Joseph and Šarić checked those boxes. The remaining market is pretty dry. **The Warriors are likely to take a patient wait-and-see approach before committing a guaranteed contract to somebody in that 14th slot, team sources indicated to The Athletic.**

> **If nothing appealing enough materializes before October, team sources indicate that the Warriors are comfortable putting their 14th spot up for grabs in a training camp competition among non-guaranteed candidates.**

> **Quiñones would be one of the leading candidates entering that competition this season.** He’s still a restricted free agent with a two-way qualifying offer extended to him. Quiñones has lit up summer league, scoring 26, 21 and 26 points in three of the four games, proving that he could be ready for a spot on the regular roster. The Warriors control his restricted free-agent rights and don’t yet appear ready to offer him a full roster spot, but they could convince him more easily to take the two-way qualifying offer if they keep a path cleared for him to earn a real roster spot with a strong training camp.

> The Warriors still don’t have a traditional center backing up Kevon Looney. **They at least explored the idea of signing Mason Plumlee and/or Alex Len in the early days of free agency, but both returned to their more comfortable locations.** None of the current free agent centers appear to be moving the Warriors much.

> **The Warriors explored the idea of trading for KJ Martin early in the free agency process, league and team sources told The Athletic.**

Obviously the training camp idea is a gamble but that’s how GPII won his spot the championship year. Especially with the Warriors system being a bit different than the average team I understand them wanting to evaluate guys in house before committing instead of just going with someone that would want a guaranteed deal upfront

I’d really like a vet wing just in case Kuminga or Moody don’t take big jumps. The idea of letting GR3 come try out at training camp was interesting, though he’s been out of the league for a while now. If they can’t find someone, I’d rather just sign Lester instead of letting him leave for another team.

IMO this doesn’t have to be complicated. Quiñones is an NBA-level player who can shoot, handle, pass, and defend. Sign him.

OKC has over 20 players on their roster currently. Memphis has over 20 players on their roster currently. Portland could have an influx of players pushing them past 20 depending on the Dame trade. Wizards has more than the 15 right now I believe with 2 guys who they could buyout that the Warriors are able to sign

Very interesting to see who stays on those rosters and who the Warriors could potentially sign

Warriors interested in Rudy Gay. I was right! Lol

We absolutely need an athletic rim protecting big who does nothing else besides run the floor to the dunker spots, catch lobs, set screens/execute dribble hand offs, rebound, block shots and doesn’t foul that much. I very much wish JaVale was available or any similar center that’s at least 6’11” or 7 ft.

Slater also said the Warriors weren’t extending a QO to Ty Jerome and then literally 24 hours later, they ended him one lol which has had me questioning his intel ever since, which is annoying but he was obviously fed bad intel for a reason to be that wrong on something he reported with confidence. I’m not saying he’s wrong here, I’m just wondering if this roster intel came from the same source as his other roster intel lol

The front office has already had a pretty successful free agency and off season.

    – Moved off of Jordan Poole’s contract.

    – Got a player who can help out now in CP3.

    – Said player has a very tradeable contract that gives them financial and strategical flexibility now and even next summer should they choose to guarantee it.

    – Re-signed Draymond Green at a reasonable contract that saves them quite a bit of money in its first year.

    – Signed an insurance policy in Corey Joseph for the vet minimum.

    – Signed one of the best possible vet minimum free agents in Dario Saric.

The front office can just sit back and see how things unfold between now and training camp if they want. A lot of things can change so there’s no need to rush.

We don’t have many minutes to give up as is so this is the smartest play
