[Mike Vorkunov] Sale of a minority stake in Monumental Sports — owners of the Wizards, Mystics, and Capitals — to Qatari Investment Authority, a Qatari sovereign wealth fund, officially went thru Monday. First of its kind. QIA also owns real estate in DC near their arena.

like with Saudi Arabia, the US spend trillions on the ME to secure buying their oil, then we all watch as they use those funds decades later to buy parts of the US.
Get ready for Wizards games in Qatar coming eventually. This stuff has been happening in every sport recently.
Edit; it is funny to say Washington is partially owned by Qatar now though
Get ready to speak Arabic Poole
Mbappé & Poole is gonna be a killer backcourt
Didn’t silver just say yesterday no PIFs in the sport?
Well that’s not good
What are Quatars thought on the Lgtbqia community ???
Not good.
Billionaires don’t have borders.
I’m all for having high standards of who can and cannot invest, control, or operate an American sports franchise. Not being involved in human rights violations of any kind would be a great rule to have. However, all of these billionaire sports team owners are also complete scumbags and many if not all wouldn’t hold up to a modicum of scrutiny.
Hopefully, this controversy can spur us as fans to demand better.
This is how it starts. In 5 years I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 5 teams aren’t under middle eastern ownership
I wonder how long the league’s ownership rules will hold-up. It’s going to be difficult for the current owners when they see how much money they are leaving on the table. The money will win out eventually, it always does.
This recent trend of Gulf/US Sports involvement is disappointing. The same league that switched it from owner to governor hopping in bed with states that still use Kafala, literal slave labor? I’m all for changes in the name of equity but it would be nice if there was some semblance of conviction behind it
Denis Avdija in shambles
gross
inbefore 45 year old lebron joins the Qatari basketball association
Nationalize the NBA
NBA is so anti-black, yet everyone lauds it as progressive.
Didn’t baldy just say no Saudi’s?? Pretty soon this league is only gonna air the games in China and the Middle East…
This is disgusting and if the NBA goes full LIV golf, I’m out.
I don’t see this as a step toward Qataris owning an NBA team anytime soon. But anyone who thinks that Middle East involvement in American entertainment across the board….not just in sports…is going to stop here, or with the PGA/LIV merger, WWE/UFC, they’re absolutely fooling themselves. They also have their hands in real estate, increasingly in commerce. They’re buying influence and it works in large part because the average person doesn’t care about anything beyond their own pleasure.
The neighborhood immediately surrounding the arena is a dump. Lot’s of vacant storefronts and lots of crime. It used to be ‘Chinatown’ but they shouldn’t call that any more.

It’s weirdly poetic when you think about it. We help to cause war in the Middle East and took their resources, years later they took (I mean bought) our land and major corporations/brands.
the Washington Paris St Germain-Wizzards
We’re like 50 years away from our country and everything in it being owned by Saudi Arabia
How is it different from other private equity investments? Is it because sovereign means an official government division or entity?
Real question: could a US state form a fund to do the same?
Example: Louisiana definitely doesn’t have the money to buy a franchise but Gayle Benson has already outlined a plan to leave most of her assets to New Orleans/Louisiana. Could Louisiana be the owner of a fund that owns the Pelicans?
NBA really just removing any doubt that they don’t actually give a shit about equality or social justice unless it can make them money
What a disgrace
AWWWWWWW…FUCK.💀
Gonna wear my Ghutra and Agal while I laugh at all the salty white bois in the comments section here.
Damn imagine the Qataris as majority owners of a team in the NBA – second apron smchmapron
Wild lol
This officially makes the Wizards the biggest dirt in the league. Congratulations on having so little backbone.
