[Sefko] Grant Williams: “Restricted free agency is terrible.”

>But the bottom line is that Williams, who will be going into his fifth season, got the desired ending in free agency. But it wasn’t always pleasant.

>“Very difficult. Restricted free agency is terrible,” Williams said. “Unrestricted, you have a good understanding of where you want to go, but restricted, you’re pretty much in a waiting game. “You want to make sure you understand what the offers are but also understand that teams might match or a team might be asking for more than another team is willing to give. It’s definitely an interesting process. I still think free agency is a little bit fun, but also a little bit nerve-wracking.”

Restricted free agency *is* terrible. They need to make it easier for teams to put forward offer sheets – make it so the deadline the controlling team has to match by is ~~48~~ 24 hours after the player receives the offer sheet, not ~~48~~ 24 hours after they receive the offer sheet *after* the moratorium ends. We know the moratorium is when the majority of free agency signings happen, forcing teams to functionally opt out of that period if they want to make an offer sheet is silly.

There’s roughly 40-50 restricted free agents every off-season. This year we’ve had two offer sheets made, last year we had one. The last player to change teams via specifically an offer sheet was in 2020.

what’s the solution to it? i doubt owners want young star leaving every 4 years

It’s awful, but imo way better than MLB’s arbitration process which is the equivalent method for players to make more money from the team that drafted them before hitting unrestricted free agency. Imagine instead of the Suns just matching Indiana’s offer sheet for Ayton they took him to court and argued in front of him and a judge why he isn’t worth the max lmao

RFA is a parity mechanism which allows franchises from smaller markets to keep a star player. It is not terrible and it works.

  5. Love more Celtics slander like this shit doesn’t happen with every RFA.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

Dudes like PJ Washington are going to get absolutely screwed by RFA. Anyone in that 10-20m range get caught up in this game of chicken with their earnings at risk.

  7. Depends who you are. Sometimes it gets you overpaid because a team is hoping to pry you away. See synonyms at Allen Crabbe.

IMO RFA has always been a good way for players to leverage themselves into more earnings, while also rewarding teams that draft well by allowing them to keep players after their first deal. It is probably necessary to keep unless we want even more players just going to the big markets.
