Should the Lakers Trade Jarred Vanderbilt for Christian Wood? Plus, Austin Reaves: Future All-Star?

Do not kill the messenger. Sunday, Sam Quinn at CBS noted on Twitter that (relaying a report from Marc Stein) the Mavericks would be willing/happy to flip Christian Wood in a sign-and-trade deal. For obvious reasons, since they could get something in return for him. Wood would clearly love that outcome, because it would mean he’s getting something more than a minimum deal.

And the Lakers are part of the conversation because they’re one of the teams linked to Wood as a possible free agent destination. Quinn noted, for that reason, that while he doesn’t think this will happen and it’s currently not a live scenario, one way—and really the only way—the Lakers could engage in a S/T with Dallas for Wood would be by trading Jarred Vanderbilt.

To say the least, that sparked a big online conversation among fans online.

So would you do it? Trade Vanderbilt for Wood?

The consensus among fans was a hard pass, but how much of that is optics? Vanderbilt is a VERY easy player to like. Wood is VERY easy to dislike. What’s the argument for no? Is there a reasonable argument for yes? What does the conversation say about Vanderbilt’s role on the team? Where does he fit in the rotation?

It’s not a question with obvious answers.

Meanwhile, Darvin Ham had some serious praise for Austin Reaves, saying that he believes Reaves will be on an All-Star team, and soon. Is he right? Can he do that on a Lakers squad where he’ll be, at best, the third guy? First and foremost, to get three dudes on an All-Star team requires the team to be a frontrunner, which the Lakers hope to be. But from there, will he get the numbers? Even if he doesn’t, could he land in that Mike Conley space, spending the bulk of his career in that space of All-Star Caliber Players Who Don’t Make All-Star Teams?

Because that would be REALLY good for the Lakers.

Finally, LeBron is going back to 23. Hope you saved that jersey.

  1. Absolutely not, wood hasn’t shown any signs of being a winning player. If you bring him in as a flyer you need some competition in front of him.

  2. Because we ended the year at the WCF, it's easy for forget the torture and agony the last year years its been. Once Vando came to the team, his energy an defense changed the vibe. He's a keeper, and we need to reward glue guys like him that help deliver results.

  3. It's worth it to trade him cuz we have other wing defenders now. Woods brings us another shooter and scorer from the post, especially for when ad and bron miss games. Cam christie prince and reaves are quality wing defenders. Also this year he will play his best cuz his whole career depends on it. The only downside is that we dont want the mavs to have good defense next to luka and kyrie.

  4. Everyone is talking about Max Christies emergence and Colins bid to make the roster as a big.

No one is talking about Dmoi Hodges. He should be In serious consideration for either a two contract or last roster spot. Of course get a big with the other spot.

  5. Assessing Vando's importance: if he's going to be DNP in the playoffs, Lakers needs and available alternatives should guide the decision. Trade him for Wood.🤔

  6. Its not worth it – Vanderbilt, is part
Of the young core, of the lakers.
I like Christian wood, but at as a pick
Up – for the minimum, going rate,
    Not for Vanderbilt. Lakers, might
Need Vanderbilt, in the long run.

  7. I personally don't like Wood as a player on THIS team. He has a low motor, and is thin as a center option (I weigh more than him at 6'2"). I would rather opt to hand out a vet min to a Tristan Thompson type frame player to get some size against larger teams, i.e. Denver.

  8. They need a defensive center to throw at Nikola Jokic, Christian Wood is the furthest thing from that. Why he's even being brought up makes no sense.

  9. Thomas Bryant did amazing job for Lakers last year when given opportunity….i dont understand why he always getting bashed. Weird

  10. Absolutely Not Vando is Proven. There’s something not right about that Wood trade.
    B I S M A C K B I Y A M B O
is the dude plus I say use that 15th spot for maybe JAVALE MCGEE !!!👍🏼👏🏻

  11. Thomas Bryant is also good for us !! We already have scorers ! We need interior Defense. Vando was Great on defense for us , this Wood idea is lame. So you think Wood be a starter, 😂🫠 all these teams couldn’t wait to get rid of Wood.

  12. Hell no !! Not for Christian wood. But if the Laker package DLO and him for a no brainer player then yes. Until that happens VANDO STAYS !!!!!!!

  13. Trading our most versatile wing defender for a guy who has been a reported locker room cancer would be as a big a malpractice as trading for Russ was. Just no.

  14. if you're gonna bring in a knucklehead, get a first rate one with big game experience… is Boogie Cousins available?

  15. NO! The Lakers need Vando because he's a 6'8 lockdown wing defender who's shot is improving. The Lakers need more players who can play lockdown defense not less. Vando is a keeper.

  16. Christian Wood has played for 7 or 8 teams because he's not a good player and sucks at defense. The Lakers should just sign Bismack Biyombo, Colin Castleton, or Javale McGee to solidify the center position.

  17. I'd like to reiterate that the coaching staff take a serious look at Dmoi Hodges. He would be the "Lonnie walker" replacement without question. Please make this a topic of conversation. I almost like him over Max Christie.
