This podcast reminded me how much better shape the Spurs are for their potentially generational talent than the Cavs were. Episode 1 of “A King’s Reign” podcast emphasizes how they were stripped down, incompetent, unready and without a culture of winning.

The Mavs and Cavs are awful comps for the Spurs’ current situation honestly (owing mostly to Wright’s positioning the team for the future prior to the lotto this year), the Mavericks mortgaged part of their future just to get Luka in his draft and then mortgaged even more of it trying to pair him with Kristaps.

While I agree with the Spurs’ wait-and-see approach for the roster we have this year, I do think they can/should start aggressively pursuing the right deal with the assets they have as soon as next year to start building a competitive team around Wembanyama. There’s little danger of “getting too good too fast” like the Cavs and Mavs did simply because we own so many draft picks in addition to our own over the next five years
