[Mavs Film Room] on Marc Stein says the Mavs have shown “exploratory” interest in Derrick Jones Jr., but nothing imminent. Says he thinks the Mavs would be interested in Kelly Oubre Jr., but only at the minimum.

Continued: “The preference” for the Mavs would be to “rekindle some of the trade talks they were involved in at the beginning of the summer” (i.e. Clint Capela)”

  1. That’s the right thing to do IMO.

See if we can get DJJ for the vet min/the remainder of the MLE (around 4.5M) with a team option or non guaranteed money in the later seasons.

Then trade for a C with THJ, 2nds and/or some pick swaps in 2026/2028.

I really like what our FO is doing so far and they seem to be trying to improve the right things, sometimes it just doesn’t work if the other team doesn’t want a trade or offers way more money to a free agent.

Nico has been reading Mavs Reddit

I’d rather either one of these players than the corpse of rudy gay

Is this what it feels like to have a GM who’s making good moves?

This has been one of the best off-season periods for the Mavericks in a long time. Nico has been a more competent GM in the first couple of years than Donnie Nelson was in his final years. He’s been able to address the needs the team was looking for and not looking for the big fish free agents and constantly striking out. It just takes a few role players to make a competitive team and not a super team. The Nets and Sixers have learned that the hard way. All this team needs are small-time reinforcements to make the Mavericks a playoff-caliber squad and to take the load off Luka and Kyrie.

DJJ and a starting caliber center and I’d say we’re officially locked and loaded

I’d definitely try to sign DJJ at this point — I think he’d fit in well and still has some untapped potential.

Alternatively, if the Mavs are thinking to give AJ Lawson more of a shot, I’d be ok with that, too — he’s shown good things in Summer League and would add to the refreshing youth movement that the Mavs suddenly got going on.

I have reservations about Oubre, even on a minimum — coming off a 20 pts/game season, I think if he’s suddenly playing without the ball, I’m not sure he’s the type of dude that will be able to channel that frustration to give max effort on defense. And when he does get the ball on offense, he could very well turn into another black hole THJ style, only less efficient. I’d stay away…
