Zach Lowe on the Jaylen Brown contract: “I’ve had a couple people in opposing front offices tell me something along the lines of ‘Are the Celtics really gonna pay their 3rd or 4th or 5th best player all this money?’”

Discussion happens around 2-3 minutes into [this podcast.](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-lowe-post/id986595124?i=1000622309225)

> Here it is. It’s here. Will it be a good contract? A plus-value contract? Probably not. Jaylen Brown is gonna have to grow as a playmaker- particularly as a playmaker. All the jokes about his dribbling aside, its his dribbling and his passing and his assist to turnover ratio-which often veers into negative territory- but, I actually think in some corners of the league, particularly the analytics corner, he’s become a little bit underrated. I’ve had a couple people in opposing front offices tell me something along the lines of “Are the Celtics really gonna pay their 3rd or 4th or 5th best player all this money?”

Look I like Luke Kornet as much as the next guy, but JB is a bit better

  2. stutterhouse

Which bozo front office guy is calling JB the Celtics 4th or 5th best player to Zach Lowe

  3. Funny-Transition7869

I wont go that far but I think Porzingis is better than him

  4. TheLastSecondShot

Idiots. He’s clearly our second best player now that Grant is gone

  5. walterdog12

I mean what other option do they have?

Let him walk? Trade him for scraps?

Their best bet is to go all in (as they’ve shown with the Porzingis trade and extension) on the next 2 years.

  6. Your__Pal

This is ages 28-32 for Jaylen.

Basically, this contract gets them his entire prime. That’s what makes it an interesting value.

  7. Several_Repeat_5447

It seems like some of these FO people are dumbasses.

  8. latortillablanca

Does anybody know if opposing front offices have a vested interested in shitting on rival teams? Trying to wrap my walnut around this…

  9. Shade_Raven

Theres definitely some celtics fans that will say some crazy shit about how they feel about Derrick White

Lol media went all last season trying to say brown was the Celtics best player at times to now calling him 4th or 5th best player.

Yes it’s a lot of money, but brown is a great player who averaged 27ppg last season.

  11. beefJeRKy-LB

Brown is generally the 2nd best player and in a worst case scenario 3rd, but also sometimes 1st too. This is stupid.

  12. WhoNeedsAWholeBagel

He’s their 2nd best player and sometimes their best. Who’s calling him the 3rd, 4th, 5th??

  13. TheDeadman95

It’s a scary thought that people who might be operating your favourite team’s future are this fucking dense.

  14. SEAinLA

Spent all that time at Berkeley and yet still can’t go left.

  15. jeRskier

I’m willing to hate on the Celtics as much as anyone but who is better than him on the team outside Tatum? KP’s never made all NBA, Smart’s gone and not better anyways, who are they talking about?

  16. CanyonCoyote

He’s 2nd or 3rd depending on Kristaps. He’s also nowhere near the 1 if you are actually watching the games and realizing how Tatum is covered.

  17. oldtype09

He’s always had horrible analytics grades going all the way back to his year in Berkeley, where models were rating him as like the 50th best prospect in his class. I’m not surprised that some people whose jobs are narrowly focused on crunching the numbers may think this. They’re wrong/too myopic, of course.

  18. neo9027581673

…4th or 5th best player. Really?

  19. TheBonz13

4th best, 5th best, dont matta, he still cant go left

  20. shredmiyagi

How the hell is he the 3rd, 4th or 5th best player? He’s the 2nd best player on a perennial final four team.

  21. RVAIsTheGreatest

Jaylen is a 27 PPG scorer on above average efficiency. That does not grow on trees. For someone mocked for being unable to dribble, he is an above average isolation scorer. His defense should be a lot better than it is, he obviously has turnover/loose handle issues. His 3 point shooting has been streaky in recent seasons.

But for his faults, he’s also getting to the line more. His turnovers with the increased usage is a big problem but he has improved as a passer. He’s a very good finisher, and is an above average midrange scorer. He’s taking more midrange/off the dribble shots than ever and takes quite a lot and is pretty efficient. More dunks than ever last year, more self-created buckets than ever last year. He’s improving and he’s only 26/27. He’s absolutely become underrated and he’s deserving of his contract.

  22. iamadragan

Idk about that but I would definitely rather be paying a top 5 guy a supermax rather than a top 15-25 guy the supermax.
A contract like this can kill a team unless they’re willing to go crazy into the tax, which seems unlikely for the celtics

  23. BradyReas

Does anyone really think he isn’t their 2nd best player lol

  24. Truffles413

Sounds exactly like someone who has been rejected or didn’t get a chance at Brown themselves would say.

Getting massive “oh I never liked that girl anyways” vibes from this.

  25. jhcooke98

Do we really think at 32 years old Jaylen Brown will be anything lower than the 3rd best player on any team?

Also at 32 the salary cap will be much much higher and no one will be saying shit about his salary.

  26. GhostOfJiriWelsch

He’s clearly our 2nd option; 4th or 5th best player is wildly hyperbolic.

The narrative around JB coming into this off-season is so weird. Guy made all-NBA but everyone is going to act like he can’t dribble a basketball because of a bad game 7.

  27. socialistbcrumb

I’m sorry who the fuck is better than him other than Tatum? You’re gonna tell me Porzingis and, far more egregiously, Derrick White are better than him? Please stop huffing whatever advanced stat is telling you that and I’m not even an anti-advanced stat guy

  28. canchin

Am I the only one who sees this as an overpayment? Feels like what Taytum would be worth, not Brown.

Brown has never stood out as a difference maker to me, especially in the playoffs. I could be wrong though

  29. The_Assassin_Gower

Brown is definitely their second best player though. So this is a weird question

  30. Murder-Machine101

    3rd, 4th or 5th best player?😂

What kinda crack are they smoking? He’s always been their 2nd best player even w/Smart there foh

  31. MinesweeperGang

I mean he is definitely their 2nd best player though?

  32. Surflover12

Lol hes easily their 2nd best player, and at times hes their best

  33. Pacalyps4

Going to get down voted. I think he’s their best player and better than Tatum. Plug and play on offense and good on defense. I believe in his ball handling too

  34. brosco2

The Celtics have a nearly guaranteed spot in the ECF every year. We should do everything to keep the best players on this team.

Teams make bad deals for star players all the time, with the distant hope of having team success that is akin to the Celtics. It is absolutely insane to me that anyone could be critical of this move when you have a borderline top 5 player aged 25 and a borderline top 15 player aged 26. Even if this deal ages like milk in 3 years, this core will have more success in those 3 years the half of the NBA in a decade.

  35. Rishikrish29

And those people in opposing front offices need to be fired immediately

  36. austyV1

Advanced stats have officially broken brains

  37. archerarcher0

Then you’ve been speaking to idiots, zach
