Joe Mazzulla on preparing for the season with a new staff; Mike Gorman saying goodbye

Joe Mazzulla is heading into a new season with a full summer to plan and with a full staff that he hired. This week, Mazzulla addressed both of these to explain how he feels with time to prepare and what the staff means to him. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss that, as well as Mike Gorman announcing he’s going into his final season as the Celtics play-by-play man (21:00)

  1. 🍀🍀☘️ also RIP Reggie Lewis and farewell to Mike Gorman i loved him and Tommy Heinsohn calling games for Boston during the 80s,90s and 2000s sadly Tommy died in 2020 so Gorman outlasted Heinsohn but they will be missed

  2. Joe is getting a lot of hate because we don’t have a championship and last year was our chance to get into the NBA finals and he prefers offense over defense

  3. Noooo Mike Gorman can't retire, quick someone make it illegal for him to do so or give him a ton of money to stay. Love Mike, happy retirement to the voice of the Celtics 😊

  4. Over 30+ years…that’s longer than a lot of the commenters here! Mind blowing. It’s sad, but it’s also time. I bet he’s going to be happy to be able to spend more time with his family, but there’s no doubt he’s going to miss everything that comes w/being a Celtics broadcasting legend. Anytime I ran into him at the Garden he always was cordial and had a warm, welcoming smile. Anyway I’m going to miss him but good for him. Thanks John & Tom.☘️🔒

  5. RIP Reggie Lewis. He was a gentleman and a great talent.
I remember how excited I was when the C's drafted Len Bias. I shocked and saddened when the news then broke that he had passed away celebrating. So sad.
I'm thinking that Joe Mazzula will do better with a year of preparation and a capable coaching staff.

  6. How about John and Scal on the play by play! The White Mamba with the Greek antique would be great commentary! ☘️☘️💪💪

  7. Are we ever going to address that all the assistant coaches left Joe & the Celtics to fill a similar role in a disaster organization in Houston instead of staying at a high profile place with the Celtics and compete for championships?!?!

I think the organization is in a pretty bad spot or a kinda toxic workplace and folks just keep putting lipstick on this pig.

  8. When we see an athlete make a great play, we instantly realize that yeah we probably couldn't that but when we watch a coach on the sidelines, many of us think that we can easily do better than him. Unfortunately, if we don't even have the skills to motivate fifteen grown millionaires to play, what more about the X's and O's of the sport? Mazzulla gets a lot of hate from a lot of people here but I suspect that a lot of that tells less about Mazzulla and more about themselves.

  9. love Mike. congratulations to him on an incredible career. wish he never tried to sell us pharmaceuticals but 🤷🏽‍♂️ RIP Reggie 🫡

  10. Thanks for the Reggie tribute, John. I'll make more comments on BSJ. Yes, it touched me personally; can't believe it's been 30 years.

On Mike Gorman: yes, it hurts. Mike has such a UNIQUE-sounding voice (and he's just really good. I say that with scrutiny)–he allowed me to connect back to the Bird and PP days AND subconsciously deny how old I am. Yeah, it's hard to imagine a C's game without him AND Tommy.

  11. Really relevant points about the recent coaching experiences of Cassell and Lee, John.

  12. John, something occurs to me: do you have any access to Bob Cousy? The FIRST Mr. Celtic (that's right folks–he was here BEFORE Russell) and now also the last of the OG Guard. Would love to hear from him while he's still around. Failing that, wouldn't mind seeing an interview with Dave Cowens, if that's possible. And…Larry? Just asking.

  13. I don't understand why NBC Sports Boston made the Gorman announcement on the 30th anniversary of Reggie Lewis's death.

  14. Earned the right from the 2 nd row of the Coaches Assistant Bench…?! Oxymoronic Much…!!!! He was GIFTED the opportunity that he wasn’t prepared for therefore he didn’t deserve…!!!!!💯💯🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️✌️

  15. The Excuses for why we ended up with an under qualified Rookie Coach to lead a Contending Team still has not been addressed… Brad should have been searching for possible Ime replacements last season when the investigation was made known public & honestly even before that…!!! That is how a responsible GM handles a crisis of that magnitude…!!! Every reason that we’re given for Joe being the Coach is really just an excuse…!!! Justification for behaving stupidly…!!! Joe wouldn’t be there if NOT for Brad Stevens… He is the TRUE FAILURE HERE…!!!

  16. Stop giving him credit for being successful with an already SUCCESSFUL TEAM… The credit goes to the players NOT JOE…!!!💯🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️🗑️

  17. Joe Should Be Coaching in the G League. Not learning from trying to lead potential Champions… What a remedial approach to the Championship…!!!!💯🗑️🗑️🗑️🤷‍♂️

  18. Mike and Tommy were my childhood I watched almost every game with my family. And we loved seeing Tommy explode and Mike there supporting him ❣️ miss Tommy and I’ll miss Mike when he’s done. Let’s get #18 to send him off!
