How are you feeling about Bennedict Mathuirn heading into year 2?
Ngl Tony that list means absolutely nothing to me
They have nobody on the coaches' end to help him improve his defensive blues. They went from bad (literally worst post all-star defense) to worse (Jim Boylen, a failed NBA coach with a reputation of a stubborn oldhead). Now add the fact that Carlisle publicly stated that he's gonna get rid of coordinators for the 1st time in his career. Their entire season will depend on Turner/Brown/Nesmith's defensive hustle, while the fans and journos will be non-stop wanking on their offense.
A superstar in year 2
His handle , his handle , his handle lol. Defense , improve his 3 point % . Self creation playmaking . Find an in between game the midrange is always there due to teams scared of his drive.
My hopes for him developing a passing element into his game must improve by next year. Why, because if we get into playoffs the refs "let the guys play". Alot of calls they get in regular season, refs usually don't call. It kind of reminds me of how the NFL looks at QB play in reading defenses. If the QB can't identify when the right throw isn't there, don't throw it into triple coverage (drive to lane or take a contested deep shot), throw it to sideline (pass back to point guard). For him, if the refs aren't calling fouls and the driving lanes aren't there, he has to be able to read that and not drive anyway and turn it over. His biggest positive for us is his fearless dog mentality, but it could end up being his biggest weakness if he throws into triple coverage instead of making the second or third read pass, just like a QB.
Can ANYONE HERE tell me WHERE the intro music comes from?..….this boy NEVER ADDRESSES ANY QUESTIONS HIS WAY.
It's not even just about the passing. When he drives he gets himself into trouble unless he gets bailed out on FT attempts. I saw it when I watched his Arizona play, and it was similar in the NBA. He puts up a lot of crazy bad shots or turnovers, I'll link an image of his shooting at the rim when I sorted the NBA by attempts with the FG% of those around him. It's not pretty. So he can't catch and shoot (or just shoot), can't drive efficiently without the FT attempts, has handle issues, can't play defense, can't pass, nor does he have an in between game. He has an insane amount of work to do, honestly. Combine that with the part that scares me the most, he went to high school at an NBA Academy. He had top tier coaching since he was 16 years old and all these issues are still present. It makes me far less inclined to believe he can just 'fix' it. I felt this way before the draft, and he hasn't shown me much to change it. shrug …. here's the image.

My realist expectations for Mathurin would be something like:
*be a starter
* 18 + ppg
* bump up Assists to atleast 3 a game
Stat wise is like I'm guessing:
18.5 ppg
3.1 assists
5.3 rebounds
1.1 steals
Not buying until he starts flushing 3’s as well as Buddy—sick & tired of all the hesitancy taking 3 pt shots—shows a lack of confidence which shouldn’t be tolerated by the player challenging Lebron—Carlisle just as much at fault for yanking him (and other players) for missing one shot—idiotic coaching that he doesn’t use against certain other players. Could care less about his defense if he’d just be a better rebounder—If Carlisle insists on playing small ball we need much better rebounding from our 2s & 3s—when Buddy Hield is your best rebounding guard & outrebounds your 6’5” PF coaching is pathetic
Good work Tony.
Benny will not get the calls like he did last season! He will need to be a better shooter, defender, and passer next season! If not, he needs to come off the bench until he deserves starting minutes!
Tony East? More like Tony Beast. Very good pod today.
Great breakdown Tony. Love the pod!
On his way🚫 he gonna be a problem WATCH!
