Mailbag Monday is back and today’s questions include a few about Jaylen Brown’s contract (including what if he didn’t make All-NBA and whether another team would refused to give him the supermax), the risk Brad Stevens is taking with Porzingis, whether Kristaps will help Boston play faster, and how the Celtics could honor their legends.

That jack wasn't me to his time 😂
“This Celtics team has generally been a softer team..” My biggest concern heading into the season. 🍦
It's gonna be an amazing 23/24. So much of this blows me away.
7:42 If Jaylen was not elligible for the supermax, there is a decent risk that Jaylen would have preferred signing a larger contract with a new team rather than re-signing with the Celtics.
And if this were to happen, the Celtics would have 2 choices… 1) Keep Jaylen on his last year and hope he makes All-NBA in ‘24 so that you CAN offer him the supermax so that he wont leave for nothing in UFA. 2) Trade him this summer for PENNIES on the dollar because whoever trades for him would face the same risks that Boston has, which is that Brown is still a flight risk on his new team that just traded for him. Because of these same risks, Boston would get a small return similar to how underwhelming Washington’s returns were for Beal and KP.
The 1st option is a high risk / high reward scenario. The 2nd option is horrible, its just flat out bad. But its not AS BAD as the “bad outcome” from option 1, which is just Jaylen leaving for nothing. The best case scenario is to do option 1 and it works out, which means Jaylen makes All-NBA and is elligible for the supermax.
This is the “best-case scenario” if Jaylen didnt make All-NBA in ‘23, to hope he makes it in ‘24 and signs the supermax. This is why you hear everyone saying this is a good deal, not because Jaylen deserves to be the highest paid player in the league. But rather, this outcome is 1000% better than the other horrible, awful, terrible outcomes that would’ve happened if he didnt make All-NBA.
It’s essentially, you can either eat your veggies, or you can eat a mystery plate that is either actual poop or veggies… why would you ever consider the mystery plate 😂 Just eat your veggies and be happy with it, its good for you
IMO JB will never live up his contract as imo the supermax is for the best player or at most the top 5 players in the league which means mvp candidates. JB imo will never be those unless for some reason he grows to be as good as prime kawhi. is it possible? sure. it's just improbable and that's why his contract is a massive overpay/bad contract. his production is more in line with a player earning a max contract which is appropriate for a #2 on the team.

5 mics for Locked on Celtics. A rare classic!
Retiring numbers is a US thing. Here in Australia, with AFL, for example, players get essentially honoured with a great players old number.
There is also a system where children if players get recruited to their fathers old club (note: we started doing this with the Women's comp & will also be mothers in the future) & are basically given the option of wearing their parents old number.
Hey John. Thanks for taking my question. To follow up: 19:39 You don't think Spoelstra telling the Miami huddle (something to effect) that if they took away the Celtics 3 point shot, that it was over for the Celtics? I mean isn't that Spoelstra really figuring out and dismantling Mazzullaball?
On the "what if he didn't make All-NBA," question, let's not forget a couple things: 1) that would've put the Celtics on the same level as every other team. 2)This is why we OBSESSED about him NEEDING to make All-NBA ca. 6 months ago. Now, I think an inordinate amount of that was panicky worrying that "Jaylen's not happy." But if we're gonna, as Boston gestalt, sway that direction, we can't now just say, "Oh man, I wish he'd not made All-NBA," as if it was in the bag he'd extend here all along (such things are the source of "Can't Win" general managing…and sports fandom stupidity). Was that real? Was Jaylen "unhappy." Maybe…A LITTLE. Enough that, yes, perhaps some other team in a great market (for what he wants) might have been able to entice him away (I still think Boston would've had the edge). But we'll never know. Meanwhile… doesn't anyone else hate "woulda coulda shoulda?" I do. POINTLESS.
Yes, the Miami zone has given the C's problems going back at least to the bubble, if not before. Nothing to do whatsoever, with "Mazzulla Ball." I love how we're all basketball strategy experts now.
I liked Enforcer Ball too. But then Pat Riley (you can NEVER undersell PR as villain) tried to destroy the NBA with Rileyball. It was SO bad (it was, aesthetically, the worst, most boring b-ball ever) and so traumatic, we've been sliding this direction for 28 years since. Blame him for ushering in the TWO most disruptive things in the NBA of the past 40 years.
Maybe they could all wear the same number in pregame only.
Last year Tatum got first all NBA with almost the same number that Brown did this year and all the Celtics reporters where saying how great Tatum was. So what is the difference, why is one guys numbers seen 10 times better than the other guys numbers? It shocks me again that people just continue to put limits on a guy, when he gave you 27, 7rb, 3.4 assist on 50%, while half of the time sitting in the corner and the offense never creating anything for him….there is a reason why he is a tough shot maker because the offense is created to make life easy on Tatum, while Brown just continues to get skrewed in the corner..
They're not the Golden State Warriors, and the last time I checked, there was no Steph Curry on the team
it’s funny, Jaylen is supposed to be able to “do everything” in order to “live up to his contract” & be “as good as Jayson Tatum”… meanwhile Jayson Tatum can’t do everything. Jaylen needs to cut down the poor shot selection yet Tatum will dribble the clock down on literally every possession before chucking sidestep contested threes that he hits at about 18% but nah… Jaylen will never be as good as Tatum.
let’s run it back 14 months & hear the “Jaylen is the Celtics’ best player” talk. suddenly he makes more money than a bunch of white folks want him to make & we’re back to the double-standards & lightskin Tatum worship. 👎🏽
the shifting standards & double standards get tiring. the man averaged 27 points. only 7 franchises have a player on their roster that averages more.
its telling how “certain people” will switch up on a Black man once he’s empowered.
Jayson Tatum shit his pants for 6 games in the NBA Finals while Jaylen outplayed him, then came back & had the most inconsistent run in 2023 (7 points in Game 2 vs. Philly? not showing up in Game 3 vs. Miami) & NEVER will there EVER be a John Karalis podcast about “all the things Jayson Tatum cant do,” his regularly ass shot selection or whether or not he’ll live up to his own pending SuperMax.
seriously… sit back & look at it: 26.6 points, 6.9 reb, 3.5 assists, 1.1 steal.
he would be the best player on 23 of 30 NBA teams & the talk since the Miami series has been pure negativity.
meanwhile u mourned Marcus Smart for weeks.
be better.
John I almost always agree with you but saying Jaylen is the 30th-35th I can't get with. Maybe 20th-25th at the worst but hey I'm a homer 😂
