Current product would be better if they called fouls and travelling the way they did 20 years ago.
It’s not like everyone says it was all better 20 years ago. I’m happily watching and seeing that the game improves each year

If by only sport, he means including the NFL and the MLB, he’s absolutely partially accurate and ironically to blame. The entire world suffers from comparison. We also want to hold true what we know. Comparing in sports is so prolific. The NBA produces global names, it’s a byproduct, big spotlight, do with it what you can. Heaven help you if the hype grossly outweighs the result.
I don’t think saying MJ is better than LeBron is shitting on the product. I’m not sure I see the connection.
tune into a baseball broadcast and listen to the washed up former ballplayers go on and on about how pitchers aren’t tough anymore and hitters can’t bunt or put the ball in play and things were so much harder in their era.

What about boxing? All I ever hear is how great boxing used to be and how trash it is now. It’s hard competing against the Mikes of the world.
The product is mostly bad because the players dont play and don’t care about the regular season. The organizations are also too financially at risk to play their star players all 82 games so they accept the load management of players

Until he was 37ish Lebron was always clearly better, specially in the playoffs.
Lebron was so good that, to have an interesting debate, the media and the fans had to compare him to MJ.
Basketball in the 90s was hard to watch. Most of the games are 92 – 83, and you usually had one star player cooking for about 25 to 35 points, and everybody else had about 10 to 12 points
The game is more skillful, faster, and probably more physical than it was back then they just aren’t allowed to elbow people in the face like they were in the ’80s, which again was not good basketball
I love when people wax nostalgic for the good old days basketball in the 80s was ugly except for the showtime Lakers and a few other teams

Think he’s just commenting on the constant legacy talk for NBA players. The first thing people do whenever a player wins something significant is ask how does it affect his all time ranking. Basketball fans don’t really know how to enjoy things in the moment. Everything is seen through a lens that compares it to previous players.
That is because the current product in the NBA is garbage.
The players are so soft and the whole game is players launching 3 after 3.
Load management is ridiculous. Players sign a contract and ask out within a year. Then they decide that they will only go to one team if they ask for a trade.
The NBA is a joke.
At least LeBron is at the level of Jordan. In the NHL no one will touch The Great One

With other sports there’s an understanding that yes the modern game is different or less manly or what to- it’s not where near as pervasive as with NBA media.

Isn’t the NBA/the game SUPPOSED to not get better? Isn’t that the whole point? I mean cmon, if the game progressively got better by say 1% every year, that means every statistic improves by 1%. We will have 100% 3 pt shooters in 50-70 years? Lol uhh ok. Basketball would look like 4 monsters forming a circle around their shooter and walking him to his sweet spot. The hell is the point of that?
A lot of sports are stupid once the athletes get too good. Baseball is just a 2 hour game of catch if the pitcher is too good, and how is a game of catch supposed to distract you from the war?

This is something that I notice college sports do so well. Both football and basketball have a good understanding of how to praise the past and also highlight the current players. College announcers are glorified salespeople. So often I watch a terrible CBB and the announcer is yelling “oh the pandemonium, the pressure is at fever pitch!” Even though the last 9 possessions have been turnovers or bad misses the commentators keep harping on the positives.
I remember for years SEC football announcers would say oh the SEC has these amazing defenses that no one can score. Someone pointed out that the SEC hadn’t produced but a couple Pro caliber QBs in however many years but that didn’t matter. No hate on that all praise on the defense.
I think the NBA announcers, talking heads, etc look at the comparison aspect as a way to generate views now that the highlight and recap era of sports broadcasting is behind us. It’s toxic low hanging fruit imo. Mix debate with nostalgia and you instantly have a drug to sell your audience.
Every sport does this to nauseating effect. It’ll never change.
I do think the NBA has a unique problem with respect to contracts that doesn’t exist in other sports. The new normal of signing mega deals then demanding to be traded with multiple years left on the deal is complete bullshit and causes fans and former players to disparage the entire league as a result. The NBA has to solve this problem ASAP.

I’d actually say basketball is one of the better sports when it comes to this actually.
There a great mix of superstars, home grown teams winning titles, international players dominating. Narratives are interesting both on and off the court.
Foul baiting and the officiating skewing too heavily in favour of offense sucks. The 3 pointer is a little too much right now as well but that will change – sports always zig and zag. Flopping also sucks. Otherwise, can’t complain too much.

Sports evolve so people who are used to a certain type of play will notice the difference and complain, unfortunately. It doesn’t make them right or wrong. I think it’s healthy for sports to compare eras. As for shitting on current eras that’s people trying to hold onto power by bullying the younger generation. Narcissistic tendencies.

Weird given how horrible the NBA was in my childhood. I’m greatful for the 2000’s Pistons, but that era was marked by half-court grinds. And they usually boiled down to which team had a good post player or not.

I agree. I hate all the comparisons. JVG said, comparison is the thief of joy. I’m old school but I enjoy the game today and honestly, it’s better than ever. In Jordan’s day, you had dudes in the league that were just big bodies or good athletes. Today just being an athlete will get you a look but won’t keep you in the league. Shawn Bradley was the No. 2 pick in a good draft. Today he’d be a second rounder.
