Do “Empty Stats” Actually Exist?

What players do you think of when you hear the phrase “empty stats”? Maybe big men who fell victim to modern analytics: Hassan Whiteside, Enes Kanter, Andre Drummond. Maybe volume scorers on bad teams like Timberwolves Andrew Wiggins, pre CP3 Devin Booker, or Carmelo Anthony. Or maybe you’re thinking further back to Corey Maggette and Mike James.

There is not really a formal definition for empty stats, but usually players are labeled as collecting empty stats when their counting stats are an over-representation of their skills in some form. Whether that be a lot of points on bad efficiency, or putting up a lot of stats without positively impacting the game for your team. “Empty stats” players inflate their numbers while being a detriment to team success.

But is it fair to label players as collecting “empty stats”. I think the Wizards made the right step in trading Bradley Beal to hopefully usher in a more successful version of Wizards basketball in the future. When a team begins a rebuild, they are likely to endure some very poor records for a few seasons. The Wizards do not have a lot of shot creators on their team for the upcoming season besides Poole and Kuzma. If Jordan Poole averages 28 points per game shooting 41% from the field, is that his fault? The team does not have a lot of talented shot creators, so someone has to do it right? I took a deep dive into this phenomenom, and I am curious to see if your opinion matches mine.
