There was an NYC high school team that came up to Saskatoon for a couple tourneys in the late 80's early 90's. Good canadian tourney. Teams from all over canada.
I think they were called the Gauchos. It was like the Mon-Stars walked into the gym. We looked like we were still playing Naismith ball with peach baskets.
What it did in the long term was improve, first the coaching, the Gauchos coach was asked so many questions by the Canadian coaches that they basically did a coaching seminar on one of the afternoons.
And players improved because the guys who were playing other sports started multi-sporting with basketball once it stopped being seen as a gym class game. Greatly widened the player pool.
The hotbed of every sport should be sending their youth teams away to play. It gives kids a chance to see a higher level of play, the travelling kids get to enjoy a little superstar status. Good for The Game.
