Just a post to go over some of the screens/actions the Memphis Grizzlies use to get JJJ open for Post-Ups (Punch). These are only some of the action the Grizzlies use and is not all-encompassing (links are **bolded**).
[**Slice action (Morant for JJJ) backscreen on the wing**](https://streamable.com/g5hz3h). Here the goal is to get JJJ off of Vando and onto a smaller player like Schroder for a Post-Up. When that does not work the Grizzlies set JJJ up in Punch in empty (no player in the corner) for a basket and-one.
[**Thunder Screen (Konchar screen for JJJ) downscreen for a bigman on the weakside**](https://streamable.com/89okek). First we have Konchar cutting over Brooks (UCLA Cut) going to downscreen Barnes (#40) on the Kings. This action gets JJJ on Kevin Huerter where JJJ has about a half a foot advantage – 2 FT for JJJ.
Bonus action: [UCLA Punch Thunder Twirl](https://streamable.com/55k9ix) \- This is my favourite Grizzlies ATO which involves similar action to above. Tyus Jones into Punch, Desmond Bane UCLA cut around Adams, into Bane Thunder for JJJ, into Twirl action from JJJ to screen for Bane and get an open look on the perimeter. Same idea as ab ove to get JJJ on the “small” and Bane on the “big” but set up for Bane instead.
[**Cross Screen into Punch (Bane Screen for JJJ)**](https://streamable.com/szbyn1) \- Cross Screens are probably the most frequently run actions for JJJ Post-Ups. This one is a little more complex than what the Grizzlies usually run. Starts with Stagger Away (Roddy + JJJ screen) for Brooks, into Bane setting a Cross Screen for JJJ to get in post up position. The goal here is to get JJJ on a smaller defender using the multiple actions. Starting with the Stagger Away we see Trey Murphy (#25) lose Brooks in the Stagger where NOP switch Ingram onto Brooks – this doesn’t help JJJ but you see the idea of getting a favourable switch. Then Bane sets the Cross Screen to try to force another switch onto JJJ – doesn’t work. JJJ gets into Post-Up position with an empty corner and scores two.
[**Rip Screen (Bane for JJJ) into Punch**](https://streamable.com/6eyxys) \- Maybe the second most frequent screen for JJJ Post-Ups. Adams is going to get the ball on the elbow while Bane sets a backscreen on Sochan to get a mismatch for JJJ. Similar to Stack/Spain P&R, you want to get JJJ going to a clear rim or on a mismatch. Another 2 FT for JJJ.
Just a few examples to get a better idea of how Memphis initiates Post-Up possessions for JJJ mostly on ATO. There are multiple other actions to get JJJ open or sometimes the Grizzlies don’t even need an action but to me these are the most fun (specifically Slice and Thunder). JJJ scored **1.13 PPP in the second-half** after Adams injury, one of the best rates in the league.
