I’m not sure what the Grizzlies defensive rating is when he’s manning the 5 spot but in these FIBA tournaments he’s been just god awful in almost every game. Immobile and slow footed when guarding smalls and not enough in the back pocket for guarding actual bigs. Not to mention he gets up in the air for any shotfake or shimmy, putting him off balance and more prone to foul. The thing is I don’t think it’s fixable at this point in his career, everything is instinctual. Plus he’s practically a black hole on offense, just a good lob finisher and can shoot a three here and there. Nasty stuff.
Even as ass as he was this fiba tournament he’s still better than sorry Ayton. Suns all time terrible 2018 draft 😂

Alot of DPOY seemingly get exposed when they don’t have their defensive centers next to them.
It just goes to show, fans take these awards at face value and don’t realize the people who vote on these awards (MVP, Most Improved, DPOY, etc) are all voting on narratives and rarely do they watch every team play more than twice a season. I’d wager your above average fan like me who watchess 82 games of my own team’s games on top of another 30 of other teams would make a more objective voter than actual NBA media voters.
It’s also why I don’t take people on r/nba’s opinion of the Rockets too seriously because I know they’ve only maybe caught one or two games a season and pretend they know our players inside and out from that.
