NBA Team Rankings: Why Zion Williamson means EVERYTHING for the Pelicans success | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf continues his ranking of the top 20 teams in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 season with No. 19, the New Orleans Pelicans. With an excellent core including CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans’ season hinges on the health of Zion Williamson. Zion was one of the best isolation players in basketball last year, and if he can stay healthy, the Pelicans can compete in the Western Conference.

  1. First. This is my second time asking this question btw. MailBag Question: Is Draymond Green a dirty player? Thanks.

  2. Mailbag question: Why did US fail to win a medal in the FIBA World Cup? Basketball reasons, not just the arrogant answer “oh, we sent the B team”, as it is often discussed ad nauseam in ESPN/FS1.

  3. Jumpstop catch is underrated on movement shooting too. It’s a little less predictable and can speed up the gather

  4. Mailbag Question: What would be your personal favorite/biggest “What If?” of all time in NBA history?

  5. Mailbag question: You said that Curry is better than bird, outside of three-point shooter and free throw shooting, what is curry better than bird at? Bird more all around player, It better off ball player, not just catching from the three-point line, but from the mid, from the post, and even a great offensive rebounder, which is an offball game. Better in the clutch. I just don't understand why you think Curry is better outside of three-point shooting

  6. Mailbag: "Who's a better overall player?" Draymond Green or Manu Ginobli. This was a poll I saw on YT and Manu won by a mile. I think this question was really unfair because it pits a very popular, very beloved player (perhaps a little overrated?) in Manu, against a very polarizing, very disliked, and very underrated player in Green. I know they're both completely different architypes, but do you think my analysis of the poll results being based more off of emotion rather than rational thinking is applicable?

  7. Mailbag question: I always hear people put CP3 in the upper echelon of all time PGs. In my, admittedly biased opinion as a celtics fan, Rondo was every bit as impactful on winning and made others around him better and had success on the grandest stage. How closely do you rank these two players? I know CP3 barely missed your top 25 list. IMO Rondo is higher all time due to tram success. Want an unbiased opinion. Love what you do, thanks.

  8. Mailbag: Marc Spears reports that CP3 is likely to start for the Warriors. What scheme can Steve Kerr and the Dubs employ that can help them win as much games as possible?

  9. Jason rightly pointed out the Nuggets were an exception by winning a chip w/out being a top 10 defense in the regular season and w/out having multiple high level front court defenders. However, they had the 3rd best playoff defensive rating (110.8) out of the 16 playoff teams. Combining a strong playoff defense with a devastating offense (#1 rating at 119.5) resulted in a 16-4 run. They did in fact follow the rule that you need a strong playoff defense to win a title. They didn't win by simply overwhelming teams offensively. How did they create that effective playoff defense w/out elite front court defenders? Can you address that, Jason, during your Nuggets breakdown? Explaining that seems important in judging their chances of repeating.

  10. 15:20 add Mikal Bridges to the list of wings who focus on defense early in their career and eventually get better at offensive

  11. Mailbag question: how would you build a 8 man playoff roster under the following conditions:

    – you can choose from all active nba players
    – 2 all nba caliber players
    – 1 fringe allstar
    – 2 high level role players
    – a 6th man
    – 2 solid bench players (5-13M)

  12. Mailbag: how do you feel about the new rule the nba put out? Not being able to sit 2 stars in the game game . Then they had a paragraph explaining who qualify

  13. My fan question would be I just found out my gf/sons mother is cheating on me with her sisters husband what should I do? Thanks to all the basketball podcasts for being the ultimate distractions

  14. BTW, the Nuggets 110.8 defensive rating for the 2023 playoffs would have been good for the #2 defensive rating during the regular season trailing only Cleveland at 110.6. So they played great defense when it counted. The question is how they did it.

  15. Mailbag question: Zion Williamson has been great when he’s actually on the floor which is about 38 games a season. Mikal Bridges has been good, but not as good as Zion, but has played every game. If a trade were to happen between these two players which team wins the trade? Do you value Zion’s upside over Mikal Bridges availability and consistency?

  16. Pelicans are a top 10 squad even without Zion. The problem has been both he and Ingram miss too much time together. If just one of them are out there they are a top 6 team in the west.

  17. I always here the celtics have the most talent in the nba how exactly do they have the most talent?

  18. definitely low in my opinion but I can see why you don't trust the pelicans
