Forthcoming changes to NBA API, according to @NBACouchside: “so the @NBA is going to basically destroy public facing analytics with the restrictions they are working to implement on their data. PBPstats, probably going to break. RAPM based metrics, done. My own SPI? Done-zo.”

Explains further in replies:

> They are working to basically make it impossible to scrape any of their data API, so far as I can tell.

> I only know about it because I know a lot of people who work inside front offices and they have been complaining about how much its going to fuck up their own workflows.

Fucking sports betting never makes anything better, such a cancer.

If this is true, this fucking sucks for fans that like to look at statistics. We’ve already lost a ton of good stuff. RAPM gone. RAPTOR gone. Dunks and 3’s (EPM) effectively unusable without paying. If this is true, it’s only a sign of what’s to come.

    Fuck all of that

Fuck this shit. NBA discourse is about to go back to the stone age. The inability to dive deep into player comparisons, etc. is gonna make following the league much less interesting

Good. This shit has ruined nba dicussion online. All these stat watchers and analytics nerds who barely even watch basketball.

NBA needs to take a page from the MLB’s book. Baseball Savant is both public facing, super detailed, and integrated into all aspects of the game. Accessible and user friendly where you don’t need 5 years of analytics experience to comprehend it. It promotes discussion and allows a deeper comprehension of the game. Highly recommend taking a look at it

This has been bubbling up among analytics guys for a few weeks. I wonder if it’s the reason nbashotcharts.com disappeared.

    This would be awful.

I can’t be the only who just has no idea what the title means. I feel like it’s written in a different language.

This sub’s MVP discussion is about to take a hit /s

  11. skoalring85

This is going to make it so much harder for the people in this sub to pretend they watch basketball.

Teams are gonna have to pay subscription fees to NBA now to get stats

Yea so basically complaining about the NBA less about public perception. 3rd party analytic group getting upset about people changing refs opinions on calls.

  14. As someone who makes a lot of money every year betting on the NBA, this feels really shitty.

I’d actually support the NBA if they simply wanted to privatize a lot of their data and only offer them to NBA teams. I think that change would actually be good for your average DFS bettor who now doesn’t have to compete against a guy running 100 different lineups every night.

But all this does is give those guys an even bigger edge than they already have because they can afford to pay for the data and your average bettor can’t. And moreso, it also gives the house an even bigger edge than they already have. It’s not a contest of who’s smarter between you and the house because now there’s a massive information gap.
