Zach Collins Talks Wembanyama, Playing For Coach Pop & Player Participation Policy

Great Collins interview with the Road Trippin cast. A big takeaway is that Collins believes this squad can reach the playoffs if they hone in on their defense and acknowledges them being historically bad on that end this past season. Also loved RJ bringing up Zach’s role as the “Wemby enforcer” this coming season. I think we’re gonna surprise some people this year, given that we won’t be putting out inconsistent lineups again every game plus improvement from the young guys and Wemby’s defense helping our biggest need.

Really good interview. I’m a big fan of RJ’s takes in general.

I’m glad that Zach didn’t bite on the enforcer sfuff (it’s clear that both he and Sochan will play that role, as they both did last year as well), but it doesn’t do anyone any good to say it out loud and put the NBA on notice.

Also really good news of how much development the young guys are getting in, and how it so much more than just skill work – and not really surprising to hear their takes that this is pretty different to how some/most other teams do it.

And personally, it’s also kind of good to hear that Pop is still intense with his coaching – particularly to the “vets”. It seems clear that he has toned it down over the years, but that bad cop/good cop stuff is a big part of how our old dynasty developed: (almost) everyone knew how important their role was on every single possession, and that is how you build a well oiled machine from Tim Duncan all the way down to guys on the end of the bench. It is obviously a bit different now, but hopefully we continue to see great development with this group.
