After all of the rumors and reports linking Damian Lillard to the Toronto Raptors, the superstar point guard has ended up on the Milwaukee Bucks but this interesting tweet from Shams Charania could be an inside look into just how CLOSE the Raptors were to landing the player.
Masai Ujiri may not have landed his superstar, but there is very clearly an appetite for winning in the Toronto front office and to put a winning team on the floor this season.

I will never believe another Raptors rumour again.. good or bad. Teams can’t bully us with assets anymore, so they create fake leverage and do it that way.
Milwaukee did it to ensure Giannis would resign with them. That's basically it. They gave up Drew Holliday but that's the cost to get Damian. Toronto wanted Damien to be able to lure Giannis to sign with us and it didn't work. This is THE BLOCKBUSTER deal of the year for the NBA and the RAPTORS proved through MASSAI that their Management team just can't get these deals done. Coming close doesn't cut it. Had we gotten Damian, we would be STRONGER this year in a position we really need AND be in PRIMO position next season to sign Giannis.
We dodged a massive bullet. It would have been fun to watch Lillard light it up, but there were so many negatives with the trade, I'm content. As for Masai, I'm guessing he got greedy again in negotiations, and Portland said $%^# this guy.

Dame just chose Giannis and committed to the Bucks over the Raptors, thats why he ended up there..
I am glad the raptors didnt trade for Dame. Would have been short sighted giving up assets for a 2 years window or less with dame. Dame doesnt turn the raptors into a 59 win team or contenders.
Still want to move PS + fill to OKC for lesser forward, bad contracts and draft capital. I think PS makes them solid playoffs in West with SGA. We get a direction and financial relief.

TBH getting Dame would not have put the Raptors over the top if we lost any of our top players including Scottie B or OG it just would have made us weaker in another area. Meanwhile we have actual prospects that are talented younger and will develop into actual stars as well as a solid PG that just won the FIBA MVP so there was no necessity to blow up our internal core for a 1 year rental. This was a leverage play by Portland or Phoenix to speed up the trade process seeing that Milwaukee had to only give up their washed up pg and go over the cap quite considerably. Dame did not want to come anywhere near Toronto for a variety of reasons mainly for the terrible traffic.
The Raps are a sad bunch.. We Should have done everything to get Dame.. This Franchise leaders are not try to win… I can't believe they are..
