Apparently THJ was not aware he would be coming off the bench this season until Kidd said it publicly to the media

In what has now happened two years in a row, we have another player who thought they would be starting and didn’t know they would be coming off the bench until it was brought up with the media. The first if you recall was Christian Wood.

Here’s the clip of the exchange https://youtu.be/Ov9JnAOnkWo?si=nVXpiDWfkL_uzPvK&t=570

For those unable to watch, Tim was asked his thoughts on Kidd mentioning him as a 6th Man of the Year a couple of days prior. Tim seems to bristle a bit and responds with “you guys heard it first from him.” He then goes on to say that he’s a hybrid player and he’s not going to have an ego and make a fuss about it because he just wants to win. The reporter then asks “is the thought of becoming the 6th Man of the Year a goal for you?” and Tim clearly a little bothered responds with “once I have a conversation with him…we’ll see”.

I definitely think Tim should come off the bench but I do find it interesting and a little concerning that these roles aren’t clearly defined beforehand and there seems to be a communication gap between the coach and certain players. I kinda feel bad for the guy because though I definitely get frustrated with his play from time to time, he’s been nothing but a professional during his time here. It kinda sucks to see him placed in this awkward position especially when it was made very public that the Mavs wanted to trade him.

This how McGee/ Wood found out they wasn’t starting. We used to be an organization where players knew this but Kidd does his own thing

Yeah I think Kidd’s weakness is clear communication about roles and being consistent in what he expects.

Tim’s numbers skyrocketed when kyrie came but ppl think he should be traded for chewed gum under a desk. It was months him and bullock were shooting 40% from three but all we heard was that they messed up Lukas assists.

  4. This isn’t great from Kidd and it’s an unforced error, but what even would be the lineup with THJ starting? Luka & Kyrie have to start and you really can’t start THJ at the 3 next to the two of them, especially if Powell also gets his inevitable starting position

Eh….not liking the sound of this. These kinds of things lead to bad chemistry and we saw what happened with Wood last season. I think Kidd could handle this kind of stuff better.

I think Kidd is fine communicating with stars but has had less success with role players. Tim shouldn’t ever be starting for the Mavericks or anyone else for that matter, at his age.

The best part of Tim’s game is his irrational confidence… not his shooting or offense but his belief that he is great. Tim has not been great off the bench for the Mavs because his confidence is wrapped up in him starting…. so this could be a negative….

The reason i don’t think Kidd or Nico cares is because I don’t think they expect Tim will be here by time the trade deadline comes around.

  7. Tim was clearly not happy in his press conference. Frustrated that Kidd allows stuff like this to repeatedly happen and affect team chemistry

I get the feeling that Kidd doesn’t like having these conversations with the players. And this rubs the players the wrong way.

Honestly, THJ is delusional if he thought he, Luka and Kyrie would all start. That would be such a huge defensive liability. They also kept hyping him up for 6th man of the year the past few years so why would he think, now, a few years older, that he would start?

Given the front office’s pivot to building around the younger talent on the team, which I think is the right move, and the addition of Seth Curry, it kinda makes Timmy the odd man out. I’ve always liked Tim, but I don’t see him being on this team much longer.

That being said, Kidd definitely needs to work on his communication with players.

If Timmy played better maybe this wouldn’t be an issue but the dude disappears for long stretches. He will be a good bench player by bringing his offense in short bursts

Great players often don’t make great coaches. He needs to fix his communication or this will hinder the team – dramatically at some point.

“Career 6th man shocked to find out he’s gonna be the 6th man.”

    Trade this fucking clown already

  14. He is gonna be gone from the team at the deadline anyways, who cares

You would think that as hard as it is to convince players to come to Dallas that they would do everything they can to ensure player happiness, but crap like this keeps happening

  16. Mal_Swansky

Kidd is an idiot for how he handles certain players, and THJ is on his way off the team, it is what it is.

  17. MajesticPossibility8

They should of done the trade with Cavs before Tim started tanking his trade stock

  18. richlynnwatson

6th man of the year for the Cleveland cavaliers if I had any say.

  19. lukadoncic77s

classic Kidd. It’s odd a “players coach” is so bad at communicating

  20. relaxingd

did THJ really think he is gonna be a starter?🤣🤣🤣 get that clown off this team…go fish with your stupid ass dad Timmy

  21. He shot great after we traded for Kyrie , so honestly not mad that he’s still here

  22. Necessary_Rate_4591

Mountains out of mole hills, this isn’t even news. THJ seeing himself as one of the 5 best players on the team is the scariest part of this whole thing.

  23. Fatman214

The question is, why did he think he would NOT think he was gonna come off the bench 🤔

  24. Powpowpowowowow

I mean man I understand it from THJ’s standpoint. He honestly earned the starting spot. And he is a better player than Josh Green or Hardy currently. That is just a fact, however, its very obvious that THJ is not as good of a defender as those 2 + Omax or even Exum/DJJ. So the best thing for him and the team is to let him go off against 2nd units and have Kyrie or Luka out staggered with him.
