Jakob Poeltl on Pascal’s apparent “selfishness”

Will Lou asked Jakob for his thoughts on the whole ‘Pascal being selfish’ narrative when media people thought Masai was pointing his selfishness comments at him. Starts at about the 28 minute mark.

“I wouldn’t call it selfishness. The selfishness comes into play when you’re trying to force plays that might be unnatural to your game or might break a team’s rhythm. As long as you have an understanding of what’s the right read, what’s the right play… I mean, there’s no 100% right or wrong answer in these situations, there’s grey area. But understanding the game, getting a feel for that. I think Pascal has a pretty good feel for stuff like that. He’s more of a 1-on-1 player than most of the guys on our team, because he’s very talented and a very skilled shotmaker, he’s gonna be in these situations a lot more than most other guys, he’s gonna have the greenlight to be able to go. For somebody from the outside looking in, it might look a little bit more selfish, but I really don’t think that’s the case because Pascal’s the type of player, he still has the ability, even in those 1-on-1 situations, to find the right play, maybe it even ends up being a pass instead of trying to get a bucket.”

    Decent answer

Annoying, cloying question of the organization and players and “media” trying to create something.

    The offence stunk.

It’s a different coaching staff and a different team now.

Pascal and teammates will figure it out. It’s not going to be easy but I feel darko’s vision particularly plays into a lot of guys needs as players, to develop and succeed.

Pascal will be a, if not the, main cog with his passing and finishing abilities. A lot more players should eat.

I also feel that the re is a strong bond between the team and pascal. And more so with Ujiri and him. Deep understanding and appreciation of one another. I don’t buy this bs narrative of he meant pascal and I don’t think pascal needs to be as ball dominant to succeed.

It was a Masai call out of the team, not anyone specifically.

Very happy to have this guy’s calm demeanour and quiet leadership for the next 4 years. Every time I hear him speak in interviews I always appreciate his thoughts and insights. He’s the best interview on the team.

Can these losers stop trying to make this a thing? Recycling Grange’s grasping at straws and putting words in people’s mouths is embarrassing. Will Lou continuing to show he’s a no talent hack.

I can’t believe folk still think Masai was targeting Pascal. It’s blatantly obvious imo that he was saying the team played selfish. English isn’t his first language remember.

Man, he is well spoken. Love having intelligent players.

Masai is just trying to keep his job at this point so he’s pointing fingers at everyone hoping that the “trust in Masai” crowd shields him from any criticism. He’s hemorrhaged talent, built a flawed roster, scapegoated Nick Nurse and now he’s blaming the players for selfishness even though he’s doing everything that he can to avoid a rebuild by sticking with this same bum ass core.

The man is all over the place and I can’t wait until MLSE fires him and hires someone with an actual vision for this team. He couldn’t even give the fans anything to look forward to this season during media day because this squad isn’t going anywhere or building towards anything.

Is Yak and Spicy P still boys? I remember they would always vacation together

  9. I couldn’t agree more. I have never looked at Pascal’s game as selfish. Pascal was top 25 in assists despite being a number one option. Scottie Barnes, who is a very willing passer, was down at 40, a full point behind Pascal. Pascal is a very willing passer especially on the break and out of double teams but the reality is that his job is to go out there and get buckets. Hopefully, a better system will cut down the amount of time he isos because as good as he is in an iso situation, he is even better within the flow of an offense. When he attacks the basket in stride, it is damn near a guarantee because he is just too good with those spins and using those long arms to get layups off.
