[Neubeck] Embiid on his Team USA decision: “My son is American, and you add that to the fact that I’ve been here for such a long time, I feel like for the past few years this has been more every decision has been based off of family.”

France had a chance to field a team with Wemby and Joel.

  2. xerxesthagreat

i’m a hater but yeah that’s valid lol. france would’ve been kinda dumb.

And people said USA didn’t have enough big men /s

  5. TheBonesCollector

Obvious, but a healthy Embiid on Team USA would be a substantial upgrade to the team.

  6. No_Stay4471

Someone get that man an apple pie and a gun. Welcome to the team! USA! USA! USA! 🇺🇸

  7. jaylson

Finally has a chance to win something so he’s taking it

  8. WeirdWorld42

Greatest player in the history of Team USA!!!

  9. matrobco

Didn’t realize he has a son that was born in the U.S. I actually respect that reasoning for wanting to play for his home country.

  10. HS941317

Can’t believe so many people are hating on the man for wanting to play for team USA lmao

  11. SwiggySiggyDoc

Has a chance at winning something and homie took it

  12. AbbreviationsHot4482

Just say it as it is, you ran from the grind

  13. stinky_pinky_brain

So he’s never played for France or Cameroon?

  14. lets_talk_basketball

For the people getting on him about this… I see no difference between this and what Olajuwon did in 96 playing for USA. Joel has been in America since 16, he’s 29. So yea, i’m sure he feels American.

This announcement really opened my eyes to how many Embiid hater trolls there are. You don’t see these anti-immigrant sentiment remarks made about Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing playing for team USA

  16. RVAIsTheGreatest

He chose the team that has the best chance to win the Gold and that’s fair. He clearly seems to relate strongly with his American identity now. He’s an American citizen now. He’s lived here his adult life. We’re happy to have him play for our National team here in the States.

  17. referee-superfan

He’s auditioning for the next fast and furious movie.

  18. WobbleKun

well kawhi’s son is canadian so come back and play with shai!

  19. adamantpony

Goddam, today is the worst day for an immigrant living in Philly to visit this sub.

  20. ThatTinyGameCubeDisc

People getting worked up over this are straight up weird. Let the man make his decision, and respect it.

  21. 416_Ghost

More like “team USA is looking stacked, why beat em when you can join em”

  22. sequoia2075

For those saying France, does he have much of a connection to France at all? I know there’s a historical connection between Cameroon and France, but did Jo spend any significant time there as a kid?

If not, don’t see why he would’ve chosen to play for France other than it just making the Olympics more fun from a parity standpoint.. The US makes much more sense for him from a personal standpoint it would seem like

  23. spoilatetanzebbs9

Embiid’s got a son? Damn, didn’t know that. Well, I guess that makes sense for him to rep Team USA then. Family first and all that.

  24. andoCalrissiano

everybody here forgot about the pledge of allegiance

  25. GrapefruitMedical529

Honestly I understand. Embiid has spent a huge chunk of his life here, many of his friends and family are here, and it’s the USA.

If you live here and decide “I’m an American” that’s pretty much how it works.

  26. Capt_Africa

No one here knows anything about African sporting federations. The corruption and mismanagement you will deal with will trump any sense of patriotism or connection you had.

  27. nickbriggles

Why not have Cameroon be lit and fundraise some money for their bball programs

  28. Pin_King_

Imagine having Curry, Booker, LeBron, KD, and Embiid as your starting lineup 💀

  29. womenandcookies

I didn’t realize he had a USA passport. I thought it was only Cameroon or France. As a hawks fan, I hate him, I hated when he dove into John Collins’ knees and I think he’s an annoying troll.

As an American, I loved learning he had USA citizenship. I am thrilled we have a solution to our lack of depth with big men. I’m especially happy and proud he feels like he wants to represent us instead of France or Cameroon. I do not care if this makes other teams worse or makes the competition look worse. I want to win every game as a blowout.

finally, it always ridiculous when they play in the NBA all year round, live in the US all year round and then go play for the country they are “from”? they are american, they are from america now.

  31. jerrycotton

Why is the debate France or USA? Is this man not from Cameroon?

  32. CBrennen17

Give me your tired, your poor, your 7 foot centers

  33. cepxico

Some immigrants are more American than Americans so imo its perfectly fine.
