Is Jrue Holiday the Answer for the Boston Celtics?

Will the Jrue Holiday trade and Kristaps Porzingis trade be enough to get the Boston Celtics back to the NBA Finals? By shipping out Rob Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, and other assets to bring in Jrue Holiday, the Boston Celtics are officially all in on winning a title after giving Jaylen Brown the supermax and locking their core in for the foreseeable future.

The former Milwaukee Bucks point guard has struggled in the playoffs historically, but Brad Stevens and the Celtics are hoping that, in a reduced role, Jrue Holiday’s defense will be the main draw to elevate them. While Boston doesn’t have a ton of depth at this point after largely shipping it out for Jrue and Kristaps Porzingis, it might still be enough, as long as Jayson Tatum can reach that MVP level that we’ve occasionally seen him reach in the past.

What the Boston Celtics roster lacks in depth, they might be able to make up for in star power.

  1. I agree, it was time to shake it up. I think overhauling the supporting cast is a better idea than trading Brown for a worse player. I'm not in love with the moves but I think it'll come down to KP being healthy and productive. It'll end up coming down to, Tatum and brown just maturing and playing better in crunch time moments.

  2. At the end of the day.

It all comes down to tatum being an unstopable offensive force like how kobe, steph, kawhi, jokic became.

  3. Grant Williams was the biggest lost. He’s super thick can guard Giannis well and shoot good on spot ups. Also can play small ball 4 or 5 and switchable

  4. If Celtics don't go far in the playoffs, what does this mean? Jaylen Brown trade? Jayson Tatum trade?

  5. As a Celtics fan I'm well aware that I'm biased, but I liked both trades a lot individually, and in tandem I love them, and here's why:

The C's presumed top 7 for the playoffs(Tatum, Brown, Holiday, Porzingis, White, Horford, Hauser) now only has 1 guy that you're worried about when it comes to injuries as opposed to last year where it was a trio of them in Smart/Brogdon/Rob. That in itself is a major boost for the C's. And then as for the actual talent level, Jrue brings Smart level defense while being a much better offensive player, and Porzingis' rim defense I think is also underrated while also being a much greater offensive threat than Rob was.

As for depth, my only real worry right now is with the C's 7th man come the playoffs(I think for the regular season the depth is fine). It's hard for me not to picture Hauser/Pritchard/Svi being targeted on defense, or Walsh/Lamar/Brissett being ignored on offense. That said it's not like Brad Stevens has completely emptied the coffers as the C's still have 3 1sts they can move as well as multiple pick swaps, so if Stevens thinks it's an issue, and I trust his eye test a lot more than my own, he always has the option to trade for a bench guy between now and the trade deadline.

So as far as I'm concerned the C's are now firmly 1 of the 3 teams to beat alongside MIL and DEN. If your greatest concern about a contender with 4 All-Star caliber players is who is the 7th man in the playoffs, and you still have assets to go out and get said 7th man with a trade if you so choose, you're in a pretty great position.

  6. Where did you get those PNR stats? They're very different from what I've heard on some NBA podcasts. I heard 1.11 ppp for Jrue, which would put him near the top of the league and in another stratosphere from Smart. 0.98 feels way too low for Holiday for me when I consider how efficient he's been across the board in all shooting and finishing categories. What's he doing in the PNR that's dragging it down so much? Turning it over a lot or something? It just doesn't sound right. He's been a great pullup shooter and rim finisher, so how is he not over 1 ppp?

  7. Jute Holiday and Derrick White will be the reason my Celtics win a Title. It won’t be Tatum and Brown. You may ask why! First neither Tatum or Brown asked to guard Butler when he was going off. Matter of fact both of them ran from guarding Butler. That tell you that these two guys are and will never be committed to playing DEFENSE. We have seen what these guy do in the playoffs. They disappear! White and Holiday will not disappear. Trust me. You know what Tatum and Brown is going to do. They going to do what they always do turn the ball over in critical times in games.

  8. Rather thinking this off season as trading marcus smart for jrue, its better to think this off season as trading Marcus and Robin Williams for jrue and KP.

  9. Getting rid of Williams was the biggest mistake that they will ever make and they will live to regret it eternally because they have believed that the NBA all that matters is slashing to the basket or popping three-pointers they have totally ignored but the big man for Denver did last season and they could have had at least two big men with Williams in porzingis the Celtics are mired in stupidity

  10. I think Boston did the best they could. And I think if they're all healthy, they're probably the most talented team in the league. However, I'm rooting for Dame, which I think is a safe bet given that Giannis is the best player in the East, and Dame might be #3, right behind Tatum.

  11. Can we take a second to realize how ridiculously absurd Jokic's efficiency is on post ups? Feels like I'm watching a Jxmmy Highroller vid lol

  12. Jrue Holiday to Boston is a screw you by Blazers to Dame. They could have traded him away to any team but they picked the team that can compete with the Bucks and sent a player that will defend Dame.

  13. Jrue is a true baller and hella of a defender.
Boston got a solid player and also the defense they lost in the guard position by letting smart go now they got that defense back with jrue, can’t really ask for anything better.
Let’s just hope KP can stay healthy tho.

  14. Locker room leadership that Jrue brings is huge too. That always seemed like something that was an issue behind the scenes

  15. IMO, the Jrue trade was a FU from the Blazers. I'm on Dame's side but I do appreciate the the passive aggressive trade if that's case lol

  16. Not the answer only a slight Defensive upgrade from Smart and a worse passer… Another Combo Guard playing PG…!!!💯🤷‍♂️

  17. Stll people going to believe much more in GSW championship than in Boston's

  18. As a Bucks fan, I hated to see Holiday leave, but I love the trade. Jrue on offense in the POs was sooooo baaaad

  19. As a Celtics fan it was a fine trade but no Robert Williams will bite them in the ass later on due to kps long injury history. Same goes for tge loss of grant will. The retool this off-season is a bold move but we're firmly in win now mode and the fans and front office are expecting a real title shot seeing how the east is shaking up.

  20. Definitely think this move makes the Celtics a tough team to beat for the bucks, ECF is gonna be exciting.. also can you ask Vinny to stop chanting in Russian every night, I can’t get any sleep

  21. They gonna miss grant more than Timelord in my opinion at least he was available and guarded Giannis 1on1 for a bit that’s a strong m-efer
