NBA Team Rankings: Can Kevin Durant, Devin Booker & Bradley Beal win Suns a title? | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf continues his ranking of the top 20 teams in the NBA heading into the 2023-24 season with No. 5, the Phoenix Suns. After acquiring Bradley Beal from the Wizards, and shipping Chris Paul off to the Warriors, there’s no doubt that the Suns are ALL IN with their new big 3. The only question is, is it enough to get them over the hump and deliver a championship to Phoenix?

  1. Yes, before y’all ask, right now, Lakers over Suns. We will be better defensively, I don’t want to hear about health unless you wanna talk about KD too, Suns might end up being literally unguardable tho in which case it’s a wrap 😂 but that’s much more unlikely than the Lakers playing their normal high level basketball that can grind it out in the playoffs. Suns higher ceiling, Lakers more consistent and better suited for the playoff grind. It’s not like a wide gap in either way imo just one team has a more reliable play style

  2. The Suns were playing with house money last year. The had the future in mind when they acquired KD rather than it being a win right now scenario.

  3. Im not understanding why everyone is arguing the lakers are worse than the suns. They took the champs to a close 4 games in the wcf with less than a year to mesh and play together. & they’re significantly better than the suns in defense. Now the suns may have signed Beal but the lakers made depth signings. Not to discredit the suns, it’s just not a hot take to have the lakers over the suns.

  4. Lakers over the suns sounds kinda crazy lol . We know you are a lakers fanboy but you gotta chill with them.

  5. Bro gonna have the Lakers number one lol he turns into a skip bayless / kendrick perkins clown a soon as he starts d ridin LeBron

  6. Currently comparing last year team to this year team when there are literally 2 starters that are top 10 in your rankings, 2 bench guys who played under 7 minutes who aren't in the current team 11 man rotation and 1 role player who has a new coaching staff that fits his style of play. C'MON man this is way too easy we are overthinking this.

  7. SUNS GOT SOLID WING DEFENDERS IN OKOGIE, KEITA-BATES DIOP, NASSIR LITTLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!……NOT WORRIED IN THAT AREA AS U MENTIONED A WEAK SPOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Stats from last year don’t really apply since most of the team is gone.

  9. Ass kicking to Denver was because of the other players who are no longer on the the team.

  10. The suns a clearly better than the lakers on paper, and aren’t comparable to their team last year. That team has got infinitely better than they were last year. That nuggets series isn’t in any way indicative of how they will play this year.

  11. You clearly forgot that KD was a Top 10 blocker when healthy and #3 MVP candidate. He is a good help defender.

  12. Love your content and respect your opinion but how do the Lakers have the best D in basketball when theyir starting guards are DLo and AR? The Nuggets targeted both those guys for the sweep. Sure the front line is good defensively but 40% of the starters are weak.

  13. Dame was TRADED to the Bucks, KD CHOSE the Warriors in free agency. We should definitely not even be comparing those two situations, in terms of legacy-altering decisions.

  14. The chances of both LeBron and AD being healthy come playoff time have to be less than 30%. The chances they'll both miss substantial regular season time is almost 100%, meaning they'll likely have a lower seed than their talent might indicate and a tougher playoff path. Any team can have injuries but with the pairing of LB and AD you're virtually assured of it. In light of that I just don't agree the Lakers belong this high on a list ranking likely playoff success. Seems like wishful thinking.

  15. I also put the Suns 5th, I think if they run into the Nuggets or Lakers they're just going to get dominated on the inside and in order to win they'll have to have unreal midrange shooting. The looks at the rim that Denver/LA are gonna generate are just way higher %. I just don't have faith in this team at all, but I think they have earned 5th. Personally, I have them under the 4 teams above them though. My tiers are more like this.
T1: Bucks, Nuggets, Celtics, Lakers (In order)
T2: Suns, Warriors (Ordered as well)
Even then, I think the Suns could lose to the Warriors pretty easily. I think the GSW bench unit will be more cohesive, and if Looney and Draymond control the boards I can easily see Steph, Klay, and CP3 beating the Suns.

  16. Sorry but there is one thing im not buying, its the suns being top 5. I have no faith in them. The team is so not well constructed. I dont even think they are top 10 to be honest. I think OKC are above them by far, I prefer the 76ers and the warriors also. There is just one basketball and you can only score one time per possession. In the other side of the court tho, they would not be able to stop nobody. I mean their plan will work IF their big 3 is HISTORICALLY efficient and that they also play good defence, but they would not be able to play good defence and be historically great in offence. They would be so exhausted that it doesnt make any sense. We will see…

  17. As long as Booker is on the team they arent winning anything. I cant wait for a historic choke job on their home court for the 3rd straight season.

  18. I definitely would have the Suns over the Lakers. Not by a huge margin, but the Suns are far more Lethal from the perimeter, which can really supercharge an offense.

  19. Lmao everyone in this comment section are whiny little suns fans. He didn't insult your team, get over the rankings. Everything he said was valid. Get over it and let the season speak for itself

  20. Jason stop being ridiculous, GSW fumbled last Season even with referees were siding with LAL. Just stop it

  21. 🤡 your lakers got swept last year the Suns with a underpowered bench took 2 games away from the nuggets now its a whole different team this Suns team will beat the Lakers too many solid options

  22. Jason, most NBA fans outside of LA find the media fixation with the Lakers intolerable and the coverage they get is nauseating. I am one of those fans, but what you said here 28:45 just won me over. Transparency goes a long way with me and you couldn’t have been more straight forward and transparent with your audience.

I’m sure I’m not the only listener who will no longer be turned off by your focus on the Lakers/Warriors after hearing you say that. So thank you! I’m surprised no one else has mentioned it in these comments because hearing you address it was refreshing for me. Thanks for the hard work sir! And Go Suns ☀️🌇🌵

  23. Bradley Beal will lose his rhythm throughout the season with Devin and Durant mostly handling the ball and creating shots

  24. If you need to cover certain markets to be viable, that brings into question whether the information presented is biased to appeal to those markets. Thats how Fox rolls.

  25. Dude talking about how they barely beat the nuggets twice and thinks there further away than people think meanwhile his lakers got swept by that very team. And guys like Cam Payne & Landry Shamet played the most minutes next to Kd and Book so not very bright of him to compare last year team with this one

  26. J the lakers got swept against the Nuggets. The suns were far from beating the Denver Nuggets in the playoffs last but they were closer to doing it than LA. Those are the facts. They should be ranked accordingly

  27. Wait, I thought Dame made first team all NBA six times. Isn’t that the main reason why he was put on the top 75 list?

  28. I think we could look at nurkic like zaza or Andrew bogut like th15/16 warriors. They built well around there three stars
