[Bam Adebayo] on defensive awards being about steals and blocks: “Yeah, obviously we have a lot of people who are stat watchers, they don’t really watch the game… straight to the stat column: ‘oh well he had this much’, not knowing he gave up 40 in the paint…”

    That’s why Tim Duncan never got a DPOY

    “Oh, you like postseason awards? Name every NBA game.”

  3. Shots fired at the goat defensive stat padder Hassan Whiteside

    Controversial opinion: JJJ deserved DPOY

    The grizzlies defense was elite with him on the court and basically all stats agree that he was elite defensively

    Just because his basic stats were good too (somehow this is a knock on him) doesn’t mean he didn’t deserve it

    JJJ was the first DPOY to lead the league in blocks per game since Dwight Howard in 2010.

    The last time the steals per game leader won DPOY was Kawhi in 2015.

    If Bam wants to win DPOY, he should get his team to allow fewer points.

    League rank in DRTG for the DPOY winner’s team and Bam’s team by year:

    * 2023: MEM 3, MIA 9
    * 2022: BOS 1, MIA 4
    * 2021: UTA 3, MIA 10
    * 2020: MIL 1, MIA 12
    * 2019: UTA 2, MIA 7
    * 2018: UTA 1, MIA 8

    JJJ was a deserving DPOY. The real call-out is still Marcus Smart and to a lesser extent Rudy Gobert who is pretty much a 1 skill defender in a league that values versatile defenders

    You’re not better than mobley so you had your chance when he was a rook. Now he’ll be ahead of you every year. Stop crying about it.

    I am sympathetic to Bam because his criticism isn’t wrong generally, but a few times when he was DPOY-worthy his case hasn’t been outdone by someone with counting stats. Last year the Heat and their defense weren’t good enough to be taken seriously for DPOY stuff (which is its own separate kind of nonsense), the year before he did not play enough games, and the year before was Gobert and all-in-one defensive metrics get extraordinary weight from media members.

    I really think 2021-22 was his chance but 56 games played is a killer.

    [It doesn’t look like going by points given up in the paint as an alternative is very good for miami/bam](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/opponent-shooting?DistanceRange=By%20Zone&dir=D&sort=Restricted%20Area%20FG%20PCT) They were bottom 5 in that category.

    [At a player level JJJ and Lopez look a lot better in that stat as well](https://www.nba.com/stats/players/opponent-shooting?)

    Opponents shooting 69% in the restricted area versus 57% is a massive gap, 40 vs 49 for rest of paint is pretty large difference as well

  10. People clown Embiid for “campaigning” for MVP but Bam won’t shut the fuck up about DPOY…

  11. lolvalue

    Bam they’re never going to give you dpoy wearing a purse..

  12. hypercafspazz

    Bam still trying to get that Joker pp taste out of his mouth.

  13. a77ackmole

    number of points given up in the paint is also a stat

  14. Robse1975

    Yeah, Bam’s got a point. Those stat watchers don’t know shit about the game. They just see numbers and think they know everything. But hey, what do I know? I’m just a random dude on reddit.

  15. GandalfTheBlack-

    Someone give this guy a dpoy so he can shut up about it good lord

  16. Physical_Passage_888

    Easily the worst part of the basketball culture. Box score watchers who do not watch the game aside from social media highlights

  17. antunezn0n0

    The more you watch the game the more you realize that giving a defensive player awards is dumb as fuck to a single player

  18. ak47_al123

    Since the Lillard trade the whole Heat team seems salty as fuck

  19. BackendSpecialist

    Not saying it’s undeserved but Bam’s salty lol

  20. RVAIsTheGreatest

    The thing about Bam is he is both a defensive playmaker (stocks) and a fundamentally sound defender at the same time while being exceedingly versatile compared to your average big man. That’s what truly separates him from the pack….a well earned DPOY surely is coming soon.

  21. aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    Hes right but fuck the heat, they are in full whine mode this year

  22. CO_PC_Parts

    He should just say “did you see what happened to the dpoy in fiba?”
