The Nets have tough roster decisions with Harry Giles, Trendon Watford, and Armoni Brooks

The Nets have two more preseason games to go and will have some tougher roster decisions to make when it comes down to the wire. Guys like Trendon Watford, Harry Giles III, and Armoni Brooks have all had very solid preseason games and could make a case for roster spots.

But as it stands, the Nets don’t have enough space to actually take everyone into the season. So that means they will have some harder decisions to make. But would that be the case if they had already traded Royce O’Neale or Dorian Finney-Smith? Not so much.

The Locked on Nets guys take a look at Watford, Giles, and Brooks while also talking about the Nets’ roster decisions.

  1. In all honesty the biggest advantage Giles Watford and Bazley have if they stay on this team is Ben Simmons.

Simmons has shown he works very well with big men players that he can dish out easy assist buckets to…

This past week Harry Giles got the start and he showed some great chemistry with Simmons who dished out some smooth passes to Giles who made them count.

Giles and Watford could both get some good minutes at the backup center position….

  2. As far as Royce o Neale and Dorian Finney Smith go they are glue guys on the defensive lines. They will help us win games but depending on our record and the trade deadline it will be interesting to see if Brooklyn management will potentially see if they can garner more first round draft picks to prepare themselves to make a big splash the following season or try to get another young player that can fit their new core….

  3. We should be in the development mode more than the contention mode. I would not let Watford or Giles walk out the door simply to hold on to two vets in DFS and Royce who we probably could get draft capital for and who their production can be replaced. Watford as a point forward can basically do a lot of the things Royce can with offensive versatility. Instead of playing DFS as a small ball five that really can consistently stretch the floor how about have an actually stretch 5 in Giles? Right now the priority should be developing and raising the value of young guys on the roster and then if an opportunity presents itself you have a bunch young guys other teams want.

  4. Technically we do not have to cut anyone if Giles is able to be flipped to a two way. We have 18 players in camp and can keep all 18 with the new two way rules

  5. The process of the Nets trying to be competitive, retooling, and developing is a tall order. Lets focus on one season at a time. Planning roster construction too far ahead could make that task more difficult than it need to be. Dinwiddie, O'Neale, and DFS are high character veterans who's leadership is essential now for this young roster. It wouldn't be wise to trade any of them before next year's trade deadline. I think Dennis Smith Jr., and Darius Bazley will be the casualties before the regular season. In spite of Harry Giles injury history, he's a skilled big that we need and he's at a low cost. Simmons is into us for $77 million over the next two seasons and it remain to be seen how he pan out so we're still in a wait and see mode on him. I think Trendon Watford should replace DFS, in the starting lineup. DFS should come off the bench. I like Ben, Thomas, Giles, DFS, and O'Neale as the relief for starters Dinwiddie, Bridges, Claxton, Watford, and Cam Johnson. Walker, Sharpe, Crowney, and Whitehead should get situational PT unless either of them have a consistent breakout performance.

  6. First, let’s remember Brooks is a two way contract so the Nets can hold on to him and not make a decision on him for a while . So Wilson and Brooks are locks and they have one more two way or to give out if they choose. Unfortunately, the rest of the guys on the roster don’t qualify because they have more than three years of service.

Second, that leaves Bazley, Giles, Watford, Walker, Sharpe, Smith as the backend of the rotation low salary guys on the roster. However, a few of them have different situations, and it might come down to dollars and cents. Giles is an Exhibit 9 contract, and it basically has no guaranteed money whatsoever. So already that puts him behind the eight ball. Watford was given basically the minimum but only has about $200,000 guaranteed and Beasley has the minimum but zero of it guaranteed. Walker, smith are at veteran minimum deals at about 2 million apiece but they’re both guaranteed and of course Sharpes money is guaranteed but also at a low figure.

So Bazley and Giles can be cut with no ramifications and Watford would simply be a 200,000 check. Giles is a big injury concern but for me he adds a wrinkle the nets need and if you told me he is healthy I’d rather him be the backup center than Sharpe who to me is the least versatile player on the roster. I’d try to move Sharpe, Royce, and DFS.

For now Dinwiddie is simply too valuable to the team as a shooter, shot creator and backup point guard. You can move him at the trade deadline but right now he is too vital to move.

  7. All fair points, doug and adam. At this point i want sharpe gone and them to give giles a shot at the 5. Sharpe is too small and can't play defnese at a plus level. Watford 100% is the better fit

  8. Yeah y'all lost on me on this episode. Undermining Giles's Performance & saying foolish ish like are you kidding me Giles can absolutely play alongside Ben , did y'all not see the game? Idgaf if he played against high schoolers & he really can space the floor unlike clax & Sharpe

  9. We do have shooters. Bridges , cam Thomas looks good. Cam J will be back, Dinwiddie, Royce, DFS sometimes lol. Lonnie Walker is ok from 3 , watford can space the floor a bit, Bazley has potential 🤷🏾‍♂️

  10. 7:00 NO!! No, no, no!

Giles and Claxton CAN play together! Not only can they play together, Vaughn had better play them together! The fact that Giles can space the floor a little means Claxton can play his NATURAL position: Power-Forward
