Beal: “My initial favorite was Miami. Riley says well I’ll go talk to Micky and figure it out. So he goes— we hear Knicks, Sacramento, Brooklyn a little bit, and then it was Milwaukee and it was one more big team. I’m like, ‘OK, what’s Miami doing? Dragging feet.’”

So, my initial favorite was Miami. And so, we call Miami. [Miami president] Pat [Riley] says well I’ll go talk to [owner] Micky [Arison] and figure it out. So he goes, talks to Micky, we go, we hear back [New York] Knicks, Sacramento, Brooklyn a little bit, and then it was Milwaukee and it was one more big team. So, I didn’t like Knicks. I didn’t like Sac from the standpoint they were still a little too young, but they have amazing young guys, young pieces, and they both would’ve had to trade young pieces to get me. And that was kind of one of the most difficult things about every trade and every team. And I respect and love every team, but a lot of them just couldn’t do it because the money was just so high.

And with our new CBA [collective bargaining agreement] and the luxury tax, a lot of owners just was like, ‘We don’t want to get hit over the head with that.’ And that’s a respectable decision. If I was the ownership and I’m pouring in billions of dollars, I want to make sure we’re getting a championship out of it too. So, out of nowhere I get a call and it’s Mat Ishbia in Phoenix. I’m like, ‘Y’all about to trade Book? How is that going to happen? How is that going to work?’ That didn’t even cross my mind of going to Phoenix. And sure enough, they just kept pressing and pressing and I’m nudging my agent.

    >I’m like, ‘Y’all about to trade Book?

I love you already, Brad… but that’s just crazy talk lol.

  2. HesiPullup

I get that his contract sucks but it was really one of the best win now moves the FO could’ve done.

Trade a washed CP3 and one of our fanbases most hated role players for an all star caliber guard

If the Heat didn’t get swept by the Bucks in 2021, then Pat Riley and Micky Arison would’ve made zero off-season moves the last 4 years lmao. I just knew this would happen the moment the Heat miraculously made the Finals without Herro, that Riley and Arison was going to run the team back again and bank on Herro’s “growth, health, and development” to be the missing piece to them winning the championship.

Miami fans talked so much shit about getting everyone this off-season. Especially Dame Insufferable.

“Phoenix was very aggressive. I felt like I was back in college being recruited again to hear Durant and Book pretty much sign off on it and encouraging it to happen. It was definitely surreal because they were kind of a dark horse. They came out of nowhere. They definitely weren’t on my map initially until the day Mat Ishbia reached out and that kind of changed everything.”

Crazy how quickly and out of nowhere the Suns came in this Beal chase. But yeah, seemed like a collective effort by their stars and Ishbia/Jones to get Beal to want to come to Phoenix and in the end they made it work.

I remember when Gambo said this early on that Miami wasn’t showing a ton of interest and Miami fans were on his head

everybody saying pat is washed, bad , etc, but what the FUCK do they have(not trying to excuse anyone at the same time ) legit they havent had a top pick in ages since they keep having winning years somehow and in return they legit have no prospects and kinda bad picks

  9. Icy-Lime-9760

Miami must have their heart set on Embiid or Giannis

We have an S tier coaching staff and a D tier FO/Ownership

Miami fans fixing to start the “look how unhappy Beal looks” comments any chance they can

Everyone signs these max contracts (rightfully so, get that money) and then get mad at teams for not trading away all their assets for them. It’s just common sense that the best teams in the past 20 years have either had a all time great (Lebron) signed free agents (Miami/GSW) or built through the draft (also GSW/San Antonio)

There are two takeaways for me:

One is of course just how different Ishbia and Sarver are as owners and in their commitment to winning. Couldn’t be any different that way. Ishbia loves and bleeds basketball and will do anything to put a winner on the floor.

The second takeaway is in the fact you really can’t say that about every team…they wanna win but wanna do it on their terms and want to cut corners or aren’t truly willing to go all-in to do it. That said, I understand why a team like the Knicks wouldn’t believe Beal is the guy to chase with their assets and in their quest to reel a big fish star.

I would say Miami has their own takeaway—they’re comfortable with their process, their culture, and their way of operating as a franchise and if they don’t see a deal available on their terms they won’t do the deal. They’ve lost out on a ton of star players in recent years, though, and the question is whether it’ll eventually catch up to them. It hasn’t yet and you can’t blame Pat and Micky for their thought process since doing things the way they have, has worked and led to competitive Miami squads more often than not since the 90s. And has resulted in being inches away from three finals in four years with two Eastern Conference championships. They’re winning. So they’re doing something right.

The true is that Micky has been carried by Spo and the Heat development team all these years, If we didn’t overachieve with little Everytime he would be called one of the worse owners in the association, I also don’t know how to feel about Pat in all this, for such a remarkable President who according to lots of people “doesn’t take shit from Anyone” I find it really odd he would be on a leash from micky where he can’t do anything due to money

What in the world are y’all doing Miami? Like especially with the no trade clause, this should have been an easy deal to close

  16. AccomplishedRainbow1

The Heat are the new Knicks. With culture, of course.

  17. _yamasaki

I think Miami was right not to trade for Beal (rather keep Herro) … they fucked themselves on the Dame deal though shoulda over-paid

  18. Joetheshow1

Miami is who fans think NY is lol. It’s Lolknicks for missing out on FAs but these players are straight up telling everyone they wanna go to Miami and Miami still can’t pull the trigger

  19. schafkj

I got really spoiled when we went out and signed LeBron and Bosh in the same fucking week. I just want to relive that feeling.

  20. Strong_Confection628

Woah, this is candid and a cool glimpse into how these big deals work from the players perspective.

  21. mrnailed4

    Heat don’t want a 1 dimensional player.

Interesting. Not sure we could have made the money work but considering Beal didn’t single us out like NYK (because…Thibs? Dolan?) or Kings (because young), sounds like we were trying and he would have been on board if a trade could have been made.

As a Suns fan, I’m really happy Ishbia went out on aggressive here. Seems on like an obvious take – like of course I’d want a super team – but Beal seems like the type of dude I’d want on my team.

Both Kyrie and Harden’s name came up this summer, and I don’t want dudes like that. Phoenix has a big three, but there’s no drama..they got a talented player in Beal, but they also got a class act, team player, and someone overall good for the culture.

  24. Miami’s issue is they get too comfortable after one of these Cinderella playoff runs and think they can actually compete by running it back, while forgetting the fact that they didn’t play anywhere near that level for 75% of the season.

They’re a very well coached team, have some stars, and get unbelievable value out of late/un drafted players, but as constructed, they are not a championship team. Culture and coaching can only take you so far and hoping the stars align perfectly again isn’t a great strategy.

  25. orangesodazz

I think Miami & the other teams were dragging their feet for a reason. Nobody wanted that terrible contract lol.

  26. CookieMonsterNova

why are ppl talking shit about the heat? they made two nba finals with jimmy buckets as the best player.

would dam have put them over the top? maybe maybe not. would beal do that prob not. so why trade herro who has irrational confidence and is a lot younger?
