  1. At least reading the 1-game hot takes is entertaining.

(Real) NBA basketball is back, baby! Waited for this moment for so long. Here are some of my takeaways from this game:

    Positives

    * Ant looked like he gave more of an effort on defense. He even took a charge and walled up PG and Kawhi several times!

    * Ant’s passing and overall control of the offense: he looked decisive and quick and not really out of place handling the ball. He wasn’t rushed, and got to his spots at will. Good to see.
    * Williams’ defense. He’s just super intelligent overall on that side of the floor and uses his length and anticipation to get a ton of deflections. I can definitely see how he was a DPOY candidate a few years ago.
    * Camara has fantastic defensive instincts for a rookie. He’s active with his hands, his rotations are crisp and on time, and he uses verticality very well. But I think I was most impressed by his footwork – being able to stay in front of Norm and Bones Hyland as a big forward is great to see.
    * not sure if this is a positive, but a lot of guys in the game thread had their expectations adjusted. So, maybe a good thing. This season is going to be pretty painful at times.

    Negatives

    * Scoot. Yikes. Not much more to be said here either. Definitely a “welcome to the league” moment, but I’m not down about him long term. These kinds of nights are going to happen for pretty much every rookie. Glad he had a good stretch in garbage time though so he can go into next game on a positive note – that’s big for a 19 year old making his debut.
    * Ayton had a nightmareish debut. The foul trouble hurt him and he never really got into a rhythm. He was an 18/10 guy on the Suns but a lot of that was due to elite guard play (**91% of his FG last season were either assisted, or putbacks**). With less elite guard play here, I’m not exactly sure what his role is supposed to be offensively. He just…seemed invisible for long stretches of the game and that’s not what you want from your max contract center. Don’t get me wrong, he was solid defensively and not hurting the team, but I sort of wanted to see a bit more from him – something that a replacement level center can’t replicate.
    * Brogdon at PG. He’s had a very long track record of not being a great primary ballhandler, and being much better when he’s able to be a secondary or tertiary option. He’s not the type of guard that is going to efficiently get a team into an offense and get guys into the right spots. Pretty much every time he brought up the ball today, the ball stagnated and it led to a late-shot-clock forced shot. He’s a great player and very effective when he plays off the catch within the flow of the offense, but not when he’s asked to be the primary ballhandler.
    * The team defense looked discombobulated all night. I get that some of it is due to having a team full of new guys who haven’t played together before, but man. If Chauncey doesn’t get these guys to communicate and actually play defense, we aren’t going to get a chance to play in fast and in transition offensively because we’ll be taking the ball out from under the basket every time. Yikes.

  3. BlackSocks88

Scoot double digits take that haters lol.
Going into the Clipper defense is sure as fuck a welcome to the NBA moment tho

This gonna be a rough season.

  4. bestcoastaccountant

Not including the loss, we’re undefeated

  5. Such-Egg-7584

Got a lot to learn from. Looking forward to seeing the team grow

  6. Engelfinger

Cant wait for Bucks Sixers tomorrow so I can remember what good basketball looks like.

  7. ArmorKing1992

Keep talking about my team, our personnel ages, the way he plays, he stays injured, we’re not past our time in this league, etc etc etc. Do me one favor PLEASE!!!! AND I mean PLEASE!!! 🙏🏽 Keep that same narrative ENERGY when we win the chip!

  8. DTXbullrealtor_

Man. Screw the clippers gonna be a long season. As usual

  9. terrordactylz

It’s the first game. Patience is going to be key this season. That said, I have zero confidence in Chauncey being able to figure things out.

  10. Carcrusher3

Guys I went to this game and wore a scoot jersey

  11. ProfessionalOwl691

scoot started to get his mojo back near the end. can’t wait for friday

  12. Boxinggandhi

I was actually impressed. Guys all performed about at their averages vs a team of wiley veterans.

  13. Dixon_Uranuss3

Sure hope Scoot isn’t one of those guys that is a highlight reel vs lower tier guys but against NBA starters is non existent.

  14. HorrorIndependent895

They looked like a team that’s only played together for two weeks.

  15. alandwarinasia_

my DA stock is down, but my toumani stock continues to rally

  16. jaypeejay

I only caught the last quarter, but saw Scoot only had 2 through the 3rd. From what I could see in the 4th he looked a little shook, and a lot gassed. When Lue pulled the starters he went up an entire level. I think that’s a good sign, and hopefully just means it’ll take some time for him to get used to competing with the best.

  17. Serious bright spots: Sharpe, Time Lord, Camara, Jabari Skywalker, consistent Ant, Scoot finally getting it going in his first game, and Brogdon hitting shots. Got a lot to work on and this is no where close to stable form, but fun basketball could be on the way.

  18. Bobsmauncle

Shae still my hero and it was nice to see yall again. I feel humor may be important this year

  19. AussieTrogdor

We’re young, but we did seem to have a bit better rhythm in the 4th. It does lowkey worry me that we looked better with ayton off the floor and add in what suns fans say about him it’s got me feeling iffy. But I have high hopes, I can definitely see us stealing a few games from good teams this year. Scoot definitely had nerves but they’ll go away over time

  20. shibboleth2005

Good to remember the Clippers with Kawhi and PG playing are considered amongst the inner circle of title contenders. So yeah, we looked horrible against their main lineups, but it’s somewhat expected. Definitely gonna be a rough year but I think it’ll be better than that haha.

  21. Krustykrab8

Scoot looked Far more comfortable in the end. Playing on the road vs PG and kawhi is such a tough first game. Excited to watch the growth and ignore the hot takes about a 19 year old

  22. CaptainEntropy

Impressed with some of the bench play here, stretch this one out 60 more minutes and I think we take this one

  23. Put Scoot on the ball. PUT SCOOT ON THE BALL.

I understand the logic of taking stuff off his plate, but minimizing everything he does well by sticking him in the corner is not the way.

  24. SonofNamek

Chauncey got caught with his pants down.

This Blazers team is young and inexperienced but has tremendous talent. I don’t think Chauncey has enough of an understanding of how to groom that talent and set them up for future success. It’s like he doesn’t seem to integrate them into simple plays like pick and rolls or off the ball movement that leads to catch and shoots and the creation of space.

It was just pure iso and randomness.

  25. Proper_Hurry_362

Don’t worry Scoot could have gone #1 in any other draft

  26. X_SkeletonCandy

The people acting like Scoot was supposed to come out here and dominate Paul George and Kawhi fucking Leonard are insufferable.

  27. Losalou52

    Dear diary~

    Rebuild: Day 1

It was rough. Back to work. Go blazers, rip city.

  28. When Russ, Kawhi, and PG were in the game holy shit goodnight

when they weren’t in the game, I felt like I could see what our players could be

we don’t have players that can compete with those three … yet

  29. Brogdon is a great asset. Grant needs to play better (or try at all). Williams played great.

Otherwise: Scoot will find it. Simons was good as expected. Ayton needs to settle down, but was still good.

With zero expectations we did alright

  30. noiseeeeeeeeee

bro the media is gonna eat scoot alive 😭😭

  31. FLICK_YOLI

Suns fan here that doesn’t hate DA.

Yikes! Foul trouble, it happens. 12 boards playing with foul trouble isn’t horrible though.

I liked what I was reading about Coach Chauncey saying he was considering starting Ayton at PF. I’ve actually been saying that for a long time.

I think in today’s game height isn’t as important as width at the C position, and DA is pretty thin. The mismatches he could create at the four though would utilize his skillset better.

I didn’t hear much communication going on with you guys out there tonight. Such a young team though, there’s a lot to figure out about yourselves.

Clippers are a much better team, and they’re healthy. No shame in dropping the L against their season opener.

  32. Billups must be shit clown. Totally never used ayton at all. He is just a shit coach

  33. nathanbama

yikes… not really mad that we lost clips are a good team but DA looks super soft and has zero effort the exact things I was worried about with him and Grant looked bad to both have huge contracts that nobody’s going to want if this stuff continues. and then there’s scoot SIGH

  34. everyonegetopineyike

I get downvotes for this. Need length on the perimeter. Players shoot over this team for 12 yrs.

Sharpe needs to be a 2 guard.

In 6 years, nba is going to be league of 6’7″ + that all can shoot.

  35. gnodking7

I hate to say it, but Grant does not fit with this roster

  36. i pray chauncey is fired into the sun before the end of season

  37. iguessineedanaltnow

Camara is him. I have a feeling I’m gonna be putting his name on a jersey before too long.

Also if we keep having to deal with Sons fans in every game thread it’s going to get old quick. Mods are gonna have to be liberal with that ban hammer.

  38. waterkisser

Only playing Ant 27 minutes is criminal. He’s clearly the best player on the team.
