[Baraheni] Sometimes in the chaos that is the Raptors defense, it gets lost just how good Pascal Siakam is on that end.

A lot of people have blamed Pascalā€™s worsening defensive metrics the last couple years on him losing a step.

It seems obvious that heā€™s still able to play the same level of defence as early in his career when he was getting all-defence team votes, so itā€™s not an issue of ability. Instead, his defensive metric decline has perfectly overlapped with him taking more responsibility in the offence. Heā€™s been asked to exert a lot of energy on offence as an iso scorer (while also playing heavy minutes) so it makes sense his defensive numbers have decreased accordingly. He simply doesnā€™t have the energy to go 100% on defence.

With the new offence Iā€™m sure weā€™ll get to see a lot more plays like this and a huge jump in his defensive metrics.

Take away his offensive burden and you really get an elite two way player.

I took note of this sequence too…Pascal also pokes the ball away from Gobert right after shutting down Ants drives.

Not only that, right before this was the alley oop to Precious and this defensive turnover starts a break w Pascal threading a nice pass to Precious for an easy lay in.

So if we’re counting, that’s 4 consecutive great plays by Pascal. Awesome stretch for him here.
