Luka Doncic breaks Brooklyn hearts in loss. Cam Thomas, Ben Simmons and Nets come so close

The Nets took on the Mavericks in Dallas and this one was a near-classic. Luka Doncic hit backbreaking three after backbreaking three late and Brooklyn lost 125-120.

Cam Thomas was spectacular once again, scoring 30 after getting the start with Nic Claxton and Cameron Johnson out with injury. Plus, we saw a resurgent Ben Simmons look like the player of old with spacing around him.

In the end, though, it wasn’t enough and the Nets drop to 0-2 on the season.

  1. Ben Simmons had a good game tonight and mixed the stat sheet with 10 points 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

Defensively he played well mostly and was helping the offensive tempo speed up as well.

But my worry which everyone else can comment on is this continued storyline of Ben Simmons and Nic Claxton being able to coexist together on the court…

So far it's been a mixed bag where the offensive tempo hasn't been there and they have interacted on very few plays together which isn't going to work.

If they cant figure it out one of Ben Simmons or Nic Claxton will need to come off the bench. Most people would want Ben Simmons to come off the bench but would it necessarily be a bad thing to have Claxton come off the bench though? He could provide much needed defense and size to the second unit.

Right now having two big men in the starting rotation that don't score as much is not a recipe for long-term success and Brooklyn has the rotation depth to figure this out….

  2. Honestly this team effort & play has been shockingly good the past two games but we just can't close out, Mitchell and now Luka..wow

  3. Cam Thomas is like the Nets only offensive bucket getter, he would be part of the starting five no question. I think the ideal team with be Simmons, Thomas, Bridges, Johnson, and Claxton.

  4. Another storyline that's been a positive is Ben Simmons and Cam Thomas emerging as a good duo with another solid performance together…

Ben Simmons pushed the offensive tempo tonight and helped set Cam up for some good buckets and even set screens to allow him to knock down some big threes too.

Thomas meanwhile looked very comfortable playing with Simmons and keeping up with his pace as well.

And Thomas tried guarding Luka tonight which was insane but Thomas held his own to a fair degree and had a decent showing on that side of the ball.

More importantly when Simmons and Thomas were in the lineup tonight Brooklyn was playing well and maintaining the lead. But in the minutes without them the team couldn't maintain it. Something the coaching staff should definitely monitor when looking at the tape….

  5. 12:30am. I just got home, and I have the game recorded. But I saw this notification……..ugh. I’m just gonna go to sleep. I’m not even going to brush my teeth

  6. Ben was on luka but switched off him every time there was a screen. They shoulda had him fighting over the screens

  7. Im expecting the nets to be a Top 10 defense n they let luka get 49 smh. He aint score 49 on the spurs! Lol THE NETS COOKED!

  8. Regardless of what happened at the end, two plays . Two plays costed them this game. The foul by Thomas at the end of the 3rd, and the non challenged goaltend on Simmons. Regardless of all the soft whistles that kept dallas in the game, those two plays were it

  9. How does the cavs make it work with 2non spacers but ben & clax cant? stop saying that that’s a bad take. N who gon rebound n guard 5’s? BEN? he not physical enough & cant score on ppl his height

  10. I have to say the result doesn't reflect how much better the nets were comparing to our first game. A+ for Cam, as expected despite some "rooky errors, considering he never played a full season, Relative optimistic A+ for Simmons and A for Walker (and then some, as we have been calling for), who IMO is a much more polished player than DSJ. Now if we only played Sharpe more minutes we could've dominated the paint and rebounding considering how small the Mavs are.

  11. The past two Nets games, Ben was benched in crunch time. Is it a reflection of how little confidence Jacque Vaughn have in him? I think so regardless of what he say to the press.
