I think Jason’s take on warriors is fair. They did not play a great game, intensity was not high, and got killed on the board. Kutos to splash bro to pull out a victory. Look forward to a great warriors season!
i dont think the celtics have had the most talented team in the league until this yr and the nuggets are still right there with them imo… theyve been v talented but rly theyve had the best roster construction – in terms of a collection of skillsets. they always have guys that can do everything and play multiple positions, at every position.
for ex. a guy like al horford is not v high on ppls best centers or power forwards list but his combination of shooting and defensive versatility is a huge schematic advantage and prob added more value to winning than a lot of more highly rated guys (ex. gobert) – ppl loved the idea of smart, and his versatility def makes him a winning player no question but jrue is a more skilled n talented version of that archetype. (smart is a career 38%fg shooter)
the issue is that in the past they've been good at everything and a master of nothing (basically the right skillset but lack of elite talent). so when they ran into some1 that forced them to be truly elite they fell a little short. now they have porzingus who is an elite blend of al n rob's archetype, jrue who's an elite smart and more dwhite whos a more elite brogdon. the jays become elite at new facets of the game every yr. they'll answer the bell soon. esp now that they have a huge talent advantage as well as strategic advantage
As a Warriors fan I’ve seen virtually every game Steph has ever played.
Last night was one of those rare games where he plays in a fog for most of the contest.
As soon as he starts with the lazy one hand cross court passes that’s a bad sign.
Gotta say though the schedule to start the season is a joke. They made them fly home from New Orleans to play one game before they have to get back on the plane for OKC today.

Mailbag question: You often talk about disrupting the base and the handle of a shooter as the best way to slow them down, how would you go about this in your games, because when I try to do what I think you're on about I turn into an exceptional fouler instead of a defender? Huge fan of the show and thank you for the time that you spend breaking down basketball to make it digestible for someone like me who has never played properly.

The Kings didn’t look any better than what they’ve already displayed in previous games . They just approached this game with a game 7 mindset while the warriors came in lacking . Its called winners fatigue . Its tough to beat the same team consistently no matter the comp because this is NBA. The denver nuggets can play the timberwolves the next 6 times lose one and people wont think the wolves are coming lol . The opponent adapts and they eventually have the upper hand but that doesn’t mean the victor has showed chink in armor . This was a trap game and golden state still came out on top .
Steph had a bad game lol he’s not going to play that way when it counts . The kings have already played their best game against the warriors and they still came up short . Until the kings step their defense up , they’re not going anywhere

This is the first time Jason has gotten a small point related to analytics wrong. You can quantify player synergy, we use functions that inude interaction terms (which are pretty much exactly what they sound like) in traditional linear+additive models. In addition, non-parametric models can quantify those relationships in a less constrained way as well.
But I do 1000% agree with his main point which is that basketball can't be neatly summarized and deconstructed by analytics – it definitely cannot.
This should be a wake up call for jamal murry. He got way over his head after winning the chip when in reality, he just benefits on jokic enormous threat on the defense. The media saying he is the best guard in the league after winning the chip kind of blown his ego through the roof.
Coach Brown knows everything the Warriors do and Mike Brown is one of the best defensive coaches in the game, so how did the Dubs win? ‘Cuz we got Steph and Klay. If you look at Sac’s stats from last year they were virtually the same with and without Fox when he was injured. The Dubs without Steph, looking at last years stats, was a disaster…
Mike Brown has created a mirror image of the Warriors, with very seemingly comparable numbers. Don’t know the plus/minus but seems that the Kings were doing better with JaVale McGee on the floor. Don’t forget that De’Aaron Fox did not play.
