‘We have to finish our breakfast’: Why OKC is playing the long game

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/38802036/the-thunder-sam-presti-pivot-why-darlings-nba-preaching-patience

For us hardcore fans, “this is nothing new”, but this feels like the perfect article to float to someone who isn’t on this sub, as it’s very basic but a great “dumb down” for those who may be wondering why we’re not selling the barn or whatnot.

TO NOTE: I fully support us still daydreaming about getting Embiid or whomever with the draft picks we have as shit, nobody expected us to get PG until we did. Don’t forget that PG was huffing and puffing about wanting to be a Laker before that trade!!! 🙂

Final note: I love this line:

> For example, Daigneault intends to give second-year big man Jaylin Williams significant minutes alongside Holmgren. The Thunder want to put the prized 7-footer in situations as a weakside defender in addition to his primary role as a more traditional defensive anchor. Holmgren, who possesses shooting and ballhandling skills that are rare for his height, will also be given freedom to spread his wings offensively while always playing alongside at least two, if not three, playmakers.

I love it! Jaylin truly has hustled his way past JRE, Poku, and others by just…grinding.

We may still struggle, have our own flaws, but this team is nearly there. For a few years now, we had a piece or two but I couldn’t see the future and how we would succeed. I thought it would have to come from a big FA signing to pair with some homegrown, complementing players.

Now, however, I can see it. The future looks good, and it’s all homegrown. SGA is a bonified stud, and he’s not alone anymore. Jalen Williams is on all All-Star trajectory, Chet looks all of the 2nd overall pick, role guys like Dort and Giddey look great in their roles with more upside to boot. I hope Jaylin can become a good big body for us who can bang on the boards and scrap down low.

All that said, I think the pieces are now here. I think this is a team you can build around to compete in the playoffs. It’s not a finished product, but the bones are there and I am excited to watch Thunder games again.
