Joe Mazzulla timeout strategy and Boston Celtics getting away from Kristaps Porzingis

Once again, how Joe Mazzulla used his timeouts became part of the story after the loss to Minnesota, but there’s a method to his madness. John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal and Tom Westerholm discuss the strategy and then get into how the Celtics got away from Kristaps Porzingis in the clutch when there was a way to use him even with Rudy Gobert defending him. Also, here’s hoping the Celtics don’t ditch their late game execution as quickly moving forward as they did in Minnesota.

  1. It's just one game, hopefully they will learn from it. The last team to get a loss. Still have faith in this starting lineup. Hopefully the bench will improve. Tatum played 43 mins, Holiday played 42, too much even in OT. Bench needs to step up.

  2. His use of timeouts have been much improved this year for sure but I did not like his game management in overtime yesterday, I seriously felt that he gave up on winning halfway through the period. Hope that does not become a recurring theme with him.

  3. John, explaining why he didn’t use the time out still doesn’t justify not using it to design a play to win the game. Mazzulla went right back to his old bad habits and, whata ya know, so did the players. It still hurts my head to think about why Brad Stevens would be so damn stubborn by not giving this team an experienced coach with a résumé. If Mazzulla keeps resorting to his bad habits when it matters most then how can we expect the players not to do the same thing? JB expected a timeout to get called. And from that last ten seconds through the end of OT they played selfish, hero ball and only looked for bad 3’s instead of driving or kicking it out.

  4. Last thing lol I hope I’m wrong but I seriously question Mazzulla’s ability to scheme up an offense or design plays. The lack of timeouts at the end of games is another way he can avoid having to come up with a designed play to get an open shot. No, he’d rather just let them play and not have to put the pressure on himself

  5. Important topic, but there was a lot more than just Joe not calling TO. I hope he’s working on his ATO plays as well-who better than Brad to do that with. But the turnovers and lack of scoring in the 3rd (19 pts?) killed us long before the final minute of regulation. Thanks fellas.☘️🔒

  6. Ex 2000s nba player like kidd or joe like to trust the player on court rather than call a timeout and call the play.
Are they trusting the player too much? Sometimes it cost the game sometimes it payoff
